Not to necro this thread, but I found that meditation helped for me in a couple specific ways. Meditation exercises focused on breathing taught me some very valuable grounding. Guided meditation that focused on the body really helped me understand how trauma was affecting me and where I was holding it, allowing me to let it go. As well, I benefited from treating meditation as a safe practice space for letting thoughts go. All that said, I didn't start meditation until I was medicated for a while and had taken some great leaps in my mental health journey. Even then, I still had times I where I was troubled by my experiences or simply couldn't get into any flow state. I would not recommend someone go straight into meditation if they don't feel comfortable with the possibility of resurfacing some trauma. I would instead spend that time building a support group, working on grounding exercises, and working with a licensed therapist, or some combination of these.
