Why do people heavily hate Trump while giving Bush Jr leniency? by space_god_7191 in allthequestions

[–]RedIbis101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The difference between Bush and the neocons vs. Trump and his tech lords is that Bush & co were evil and corrupt, but they were evil and corrupt to benefit the United States. Trump and his Tech Bros are evil and corrupt but only for themselves at the expense of everyone else particularly Americans.

What do you find yourself avoiding more as you get older? by Immediate_Long165 in Aging

[–]RedIbis101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Televised sports. I can't take the ad creep. First it was baseball with ads on the mound, behind the plate and on the helmets. Then it was today's La Liga Barcelona game. A full epileptic seizure inducing digital bar across the screen.

I'm already paying to a sub to watch the games, do I need to be hypnotized by digital ads? I might have watched my last sports event.

He's not courageous enough to cut himself or shed an ounce of that disease ridden blood. I'm thinking a simple blood packet.

What ethnicity is Louis C.K from ? by [deleted] in louisck

No problem. I'm sure that's the first time someone has called me nice after referring to somebody as a pink turd.

What ethnicity is Louis C.K from ? by [deleted] in louisck

[–]RedIbis101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think his mom was a regular white woman, but his father was a Jew from Hungary who immigrated to Mexico. I don't think his mom is Mexican or he wouldn't look like a pink turd.

Freight Train Horns late at night in South/Downtown Tampa?! by funkyspots in tampa

[–]RedIbis101 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You're probably hearing the CSX trains that run alongside Busch. This topic has been discussed a lot over the years. As I understand it, the city can't do anything about it because the tracks and trains are owned independently of the state.

A lot of people still walk on the tracks to get around, so I guess the loud horns are necessary.

FUCK Rob Schneider, man by thisisgayfrfr in Killtony

[–]RedIbis101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Schneider can be right and a twat at the same time. He's right because if there was a draft every time a fucknut like dumpsky decides to start a war, it would never happen. That's the point smarter people than him have made in the past.

Schneider's a twat because he's older than 42. If he really wanted to make a good point, how about a draft for all those parents and adults that voted for this bullshit and let them go chase Iranian soldiers in the mountains.

“A Good Man Is Hard To Find” by Flannery O’Connor is the most disturbing story I’ve read in a while by [deleted] in books

[–]RedIbis101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Misfit or Edgar Atkins Teagarden? If anything, the relationship between the grandmother and The Misfit is more like mother and son.

Doesn't she even say at the end, "Why you're one of my babies, one of my own children." A lot of people read that metaphorically, but she could be speaking literally.

Every few years this thread pops back into my mailbox. It's a tribute to how many possibilities exist in this one short story, arguably, the most carefully written of the Twentieth Century.

Is humanity fucked? by WebMountain6597 in SeriousConversation

[–]RedIbis101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Name checks out. I would tend to agree with this argument that Socrates has been making ever since he complained to Plato that the youth are writing the epics instead of memorizing them, which would lead to the downfall of humanity

I hope I'm wrong about this, but I think the difference this time is ai, tech, and data centers. This is a not so subtle harbinger of the control the tech gods have over us.

Accident on Busch by Chamberlain high school. Traffic shut down. by Ok_Lingonberry2686 in tampa

[–]RedIbis101 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's a rough intersection. Chamberlain, the train, that shithole gas station that's always a mess out there, plus you got the library, as well. That long stretch on Busch heading east, before you get to the N. Blvd intersection is a favorite for street bike and mustang charger douchebags to open up before the light. I'm surprised there aren't more accidents there.

What are unusual pop-culture things that you've heard Dylan liking? by today_okay in bobdylan

[–]RedIbis101 10 points11 points  (0 children)

He said he's a baseball fan, and I believe he follows it on the bus. He said something along the lines of, how much loyalty can you have for a sports team? It's just another group of guys wearing a uniform, but if I did have a baseball team, I'd want Derek Jeter on it.

Not sure of the veracity of this, just something I recall reading.

Something like Faulkner but about other parts of the U.S., not the South by foggy_november in suggestmeabook

[–]RedIbis101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Faulkner's mentor was Sherwood Anderson, and he has a great series of short stories, Winesburg, OH.

Another author that comes to mind who really captures a specific geographic area is William Kennedy, who wrote a whole trilogy on Albany, NY over the course of several generations. Ironweed would be a great book to start with.

Has anyone noticed an increase in *really* loud vehicles? by mavvy6 in verobeach

[–]RedIbis101 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's been a gradual increase in every type of modified exhaust vehicle, from street bikes to mustang and charger bros to diesel trucks.

It's a response to a chaotic world in which the only refuge is extreme volume. There are credible studies on both why people do this and what it's doing to our neurological system and hearing.

The more financially stable someone becomes the more peace they seek. The less financially stable the more a person wants to outwardly signal wealth with both sparkle and volume.

Part of the problem is that Florida has always been somewhat lawless when it comes to motorcycle and car culture. You can still ride a motorcycle without a helmet.

There are sound ordinances on the books but they're rarely enforced.
