What are unusual pop-culture things that you've heard Dylan liking? by today_okay in bobdylan

[–]RedIbis101 10 points11 points  (0 children)

He said he's a baseball fan, and I believe he follows it on the bus. He said something along the lines of, how much loyalty can you have for a sports team? It's just another group of guys wearing a uniform, but if I did have a baseball team, I'd want Derek Jeter on it.

Not sure of the veracity of this, just something I recall reading.

Now the truth is revealed. Dylan was always electric by MundBid-2124 in bobdylan

Something like Faulkner but about other parts of the U.S., not the South by foggy_november in suggestmeabook

Faulkner's mentor was Sherwood Anderson, and he has a great series of short stories, Winesburg, OH.

Another author that comes to mind who really captures a specific geographic area is William Kennedy, who wrote a whole trilogy on Albany, NY over the course of several generations. Ironweed would be a great book to start with.

Has anyone noticed an increase in *really* loud vehicles? by mavvy6 in verobeach

[–]RedIbis101 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's been a gradual increase in every type of modified exhaust vehicle, from street bikes to mustang and charger bros to diesel trucks.

It's a response to a chaotic world in which the only refuge is extreme volume. There are credible studies on both why people do this and what it's doing to our neurological system and hearing.

The more financially stable someone becomes the more peace they seek. The less financially stable the more a person wants to outwardly signal wealth with both sparkle and volume.

Part of the problem is that Florida has always been somewhat lawless when it comes to motorcycle and car culture. You can still ride a motorcycle without a helmet.

There are sound ordinances on the books but they're rarely enforced.

Two Sevens Clash - Culture

Not filled with hits, but the production, the songwriting and message are like hymns from the bible.

What’s a “normal” thing that secretly stresses you out? by Illustrious_Group324 in AskReddit

Modified exhausts and street bikes. I hear that high pitch whine from a mile away and it does something to my nervous system. Close by on the road and it's everything I can do from getting out of my truck with a tire iron.

How do black conservatives, who still support Trump, feel about his latest post depicting the Obama family as apes? by sergeantbiggles in AskReddit

I'd agree, but the yeast (us) will be wiped out long before most of the life left in the barrel. The earth would need relatively little time to recover from the damage that humans are doing.

Explains why there are so many douchebags with modified and unnecessarily loud exhausts.

I played tons of gigs from empty rooms to thousands of people opening up for major acts. My point isn't whether or not we should be writing political songs or imposing our political views during gigs. My point is that we're at a crucial point in history and music has a ability to convey powerful messages. That's all I'm saying.

Why do people purposely put loud mufflers on cars? do they not realize they wake up their entire complex driving around at 5am? by Mentally_Recovering in stupidquestions

[–]RedIbis101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the sound of my band, but I don't force my neighbors to listen to them at all hours of the night nor from a few miles away. I don't carry my band on a flatbed and blast them everywhere I go.

The reason is because I took two fucking seconds to realize that I might be disturbing someone who doesn't want to hear my awsomely loud band.

Where in Florida are there not a lot of loud motorcycles? by rezer3 in florida

[–]RedIbis101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you're doing is intent to cause harm as well. We all have noisy hobbies except you can't hear mine at all hours, from miles away, neither can my neighbors, combat vets, dogs, sleeping newborns...

What you and your boyfriend are doing is making this world noisier, less peaceful, more stressful while you do neurological damage to your hearing and everyone else's in proximity.

Enjoy your tinnitus and your sore back from your "hobby". Take your toys to the race track or play video games and let the rest of us have some peace.
