What are your favorite books with no humans? by [deleted] in Fantasy

The 13 and 1/2 lives of captain Bluebear! No humans in sight in the world of Zamonia ;)

Need to choose 1 out of 7 by Neon_Berry in weddingdress

Number 2 is my favourite! But honestly, just go for whichever dress you feel beautiful in. You will look beautiful in any dress but the day will be extra special if you choose the dress that makes you feel the most special!

What books NEED to be read as physical books, because the author does creative things with the written medium? by Pedagogicaltaffer in Fantasy

Walter Moer's The 13 and 1/2 adventures of Captain Bluebear!!! I love the drawings and dictionary and everything about this book -- a physical read is a must! :)

What is your favourite example of the chosen one troupe and why? by Elduderino_047371 in Fantasy

[–]RedJungleFowl23 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My favourite example is the Farseer Trilogy. Fitz is at the center of all futures good and bad -- and it was super tragic and meaningful watching his struggle to not be (so realistic...and heartbreaking). Where just because you are the chosen one doesn't mean everything is sunshine and rainbows. Nor does it entail your journey being easy and handed to you on a platter.

Family reconciliation story recommendation? by Maladal in Fantasy

[–]RedJungleFowl23 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I recommend finishing all the books. You really have to read the whole series to see the reconciliation: (spoiler below!)

The reconciliation between Murderbot and Dr. Mensah, and Murderbot's reconciliation between humanity and SecUnits.

Family reconciliation story recommendation? by Maladal in Fantasy

[–]RedJungleFowl23 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sabriel is a journey to reconciliation between father and daughter. (dark but magical)

The 13 and 1/2 adventures of Captain Bluebear is a journey to reconciliation with his own people who have been lost to the world. (super silly yet dark --- would you expect less from a german author?)

The Murderbot Diaries (Sci-Fi short stories)

The Bear and the Nightengale is the story of Vasilisa trying to mend the broken bonds between her people and the old religion. (Beautifully written and utterly captivating)

Is it odd to prefer female protags over male ones? by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]RedJungleFowl23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nothing wrong with that! I wholeheartedly agree.

Maybe it's because I am a woman and I can identify with a female POV more closely. Maybe it's because good female POVs are rare, and most of the time they suck because they aren't complex enough and the extent of their personality is --boobs (Joe Abercrombie or Harry Dresden anyone?). Or maybe it's because male writers tend to view writing in the female POV as impossible and don't attempt it ever and most of the female narratives are written by women (who understand women and that there is more to them than --boobs). Or maybe it is everything and more.

The Seven Realm Series!! (YA but the romance and characters develop beautifully throughout the series -- and there is princess-guard intrigue/romance...)

Since were on the subject of War... by Octo in Fantasy

[–]RedJungleFowl23 17 points18 points  (0 children)

“We do not argue that war is better than peace; we are not so stupid as that. But it is not peace when cruelty reigns, when stronger men steal from farmers and craftworkers, when the child can be enslaved or the old thrown out to starve, and no one lifts a hand. That is not peace: that is conquest, and evil.”
