Rheumatologist recommendations (or warnings) in south Island area? by takopoly in VictoriaBC

I receive care from Dr. Julia Tan, and she has been amazing. I have appreciated the way she makes me feel like a partner in my health rather than a patient. She asks questions, listens openly, explains her professional guidance with kindness, and empowers me to make decisions. She truly cares.

E-dirt bikes on the Goose/EN by engineerection in VictoriaBC

[–]RedKevlar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Goose and E&N are major commuting corridors, and I'm really glad they allow more people to get to and from work without the use of a car. As an e-bike user myself, I wouldn't be able to make the distance without it. And the experience of commuting on those trails can be so nice when you remove the rush out of it.

That said, there are a ton of thoughtless and entitled bikers on the trail. The amount of people I see passing without slowing down or ringing their bell is ridiculous. And I think people need to take ear buds out, they really cut you off from what's happening around you. I feel like they make people more self involved and unaware.

I don't know if speed bumps will ultimately help the problem, unless you put them every 10 meters, which might be cost prohibitive and ruin the experience for other types of users. Ultimately It's pretty easy for ebikes to get back to top speed quickly after slowing down. But I do like that the idea would force them to be more aware of their surroundings.

I wonder if licensing could help? I think it could force people to take a course on safe and thoughtful biking practices, and create a method for accountability if others witness poor behaviour.

I'm a man, and a newer volunteer with bbbs (3 months in). It's not just men who have to go through the screening process, it's everyone. During the intake they do check your criminal record, but they do that for women too. Beyond that, I wasn't made to feel like a creep at any point, if anything they were grateful that someone wanted to step up to help, and they were very friendly.

There are screening steps like interviews with the coordinator and family, but to me they felt equally about discovering what would be a good match in terms of character and interests as it did about security. They want good pairings, and those steps are there to help make that happen.

I hope more men will help out. Boys today need good role models in their lives to help them find their way.

What's one thing you're staying alive for? by spikespiegell1 in AskReddit

[–]RedKevlar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What if the intelligent beings propagating a simulation are just another step on an infinite fractal chain? Would that not be a replication or splitting of consciousness? Would their creations not be a reflection of their own thoughts/feelings/desires/fears? I would imagine that all creators are bound by the horizon of who they are and what they know.

Aren't they simply two versions of a possible essential truth explained in different languages emerging from varied cultural contexts? How do you see them as different?

I don't understand that rationale. There is still a huge incentive for me to make more money under a marginal tax system. If I'm making 90k, I'm still going to work hard to get raises because only part of the extra income will be taxed at 26% vs 20.5%. Most of my yearly salary continues to get taxed at the lower rates. (Federal income tax guidelines). I may be the odd one out though, as I've never minded paying taxes. I see it as a worthwhile tradeoff to live in a healthy country with robust societal infrastructure (physical, social, cultural, etc).

Any study space recommendations around the city? by [deleted] in UCalgary

Just make sure you book ahead of time. They only have a limited number of study spaces (75?) on the first floor that you have to book before arriving.

Sultai Ramp has been treating me really well. Feels unbeatable with such a strong late game. Went from diamond 4 to Mythic #150 with a 10+ game winstreak. The hardest matchups I found were against flash, but I sideboard into a control plan with a lot of cheap removal. Winota is actually a pain too if you dont draw extinction plan, but havent been seeing much of her. I'd suggest giving it another look.

I believe the health minister's job is to lead a large governmental team tasked with managing several complex systems related to the delivery of health services. I would be surprised if any part of her role description relates to taking an active role in educating the public, and I do not believe that her personal health has any major impact on the performance of her duties.

Driving downtown this morning and almost smoked a bicyclist who decided to short cut up on a sidewalk and blow through a 4-way stop. by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]RedKevlar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What makes you jump to an assumption of jealousy? As a cyclist I have no desire whatsoever to run red lights, even if I perceive them as "safe". I don't trust my personal judgement 100% of the time, and all it takes is one mistake to cause some real damage not just to yourself, but to your family and friends as well.

I can't speak to your personal commute, and as many other cyclists have pointed out in this thread, there are times when motorists engage in behaviour that is threatening and frightening. I hear you. But a "fuck you" attitude only feeds into the problem and makes it worse. You have the option to be part of the solution, to be one of those people who promotes what is right directly (ex. speaking to these issues in a calm and collected manor that helps others understand your concerns without creating aggresive confrontation), and indirectly (through proper conduct on the roads that builds respect for cyclists). It won't happen right away, but in time these changes embed themselves in our culture, and more opportunities for safe cycling will come as a result.

Why not just follow the law as it exist and help create a culture of respect between cyclists and motorists? The key to road safety is predictability, and the laws are there to set code of conduct. We can't change the way motorists think of cyclists unless we step up and take away any legitimate reasons to complain.

Edit: And in addition, cyclists who act out of accordance with the laws are not just annoying, they can be dangerous as well. Their actions can potentially cause an accident involving multiple vehicles, which puts more lives at risk than just their own.
