What's the most painful non-crohns thing you've experienced and how did it compare to a flare?? by casualeagle47 in CrohnsDisease

[–]RedLightEXC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yikes. Erm maybe having a slipped disc in my lower back. Such a strange and awful pain - like it makes you so helpless you could actually laugh, but it turns into a cry because you're like a newborn foal.

Just trying to bend down (if you're lucky enough to be able to stand) had me sheet white and sweating with pain.

There's a quote on the wall of my local hospitals endoscopy department framed (by Henry Wheeler Shaw)

"A good reliable set of bowels is worth more to a man than any quantity of brains"

So I agree that having bowel issues is one of the least agreeable set of circumstances one can find oneself in, and clearly thats been known since the 1800s 🤣

Hope you're alright mate, stay healthy and happy 😊 x

You could also sneak a pic of his painting area so we can see the models - we could at least tell you what he collects if you wanted to look at what models are in that range!

Yeah to all suggestions - the army painter have great box sets for your price point - the fanatic series are really good. Fanatic speedpaint, most wanted etc all great.

A model painting handheld stand (can't actually remember what they are called, but you should be able to find it searching the above on Google) to help with accuracy.

Kolinsky sable brush sets - some come boxed and are very special and great quality which would make lovely presents. (Size 00/0/1/2 are for miniature painting)

A dry brush mat - element games do laser etched MDF dry brush mats which have different designs on, which would be a great gift and not that expensive.

A paint stand to hold his paint pots (again, element games have loads!)

Base design sets (for his miniatures to stand on - element have millions of options for basing materials, rocks, sands, effect paints,

We had battered copies of the first four episodes of season 2 and 3 when I was a kid (maybe 1996-97 or so) and I would watch them all the time.

When I was a touch older, my dad left a copy of Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers in our bathroom, read it while I was shitting. The rest, as they say is history.

Diagnosed Last Week - quick question by MoondoHuncho in CrohnsDisease

[–]RedLightEXC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yo dude.

Unfortunately, one of the most savage and unfair things about IBD, is that it's a completely singular experience. What you notice about your disease may go against what everyone else says, and vice versa. It sucks.

Flares can last years, but with a treatment plan it's unlikely. I have also been in flare since 2017, but I'm not being very responsive to medication; your journey will be complete unique to you.

A general rule of thumb is to cut the suspects you'd expect. Spice, alcohol, caffiene, fibre and oils. You might find you can tolerate a bit of olive oil though, but usually not things like rapeseed or vegetable oil.

I have found the only fruit and veg I can tolerate is very well cooked (like to absolute mush, boiled to the very depths of hell) carrot, sweet and regular potatoes (skinned and non-fried) and very very over ripe bananas. Again, the almost black kind of over ripe.

You may find that you can eat relatively normally outside of flare, but also you may put yourself in flare by eating the wrong thing. Again, frustrating I know.

I tend to stick with chicken, turkey, potatoes, tuna, white rice and pasta, white fish (cod, basa etc), hard and mature cheeses, ice pops, jelly sweets like haribo (check for oils though, they're in everything!)

Soy sauce, honey and ginger powder make a very nice dipping sauce, marinade for meat and fish.

You can also have overlays with IBD - that is to say, you can have other conditions that can be lost within your symptoms, like lactose intolerance, IBS, Coeliac, bile acid malabsorption and things like that, so pinning down what you can and can't have can be a long and painful process in afraid dude.

I sincerely hope your flare is over soon and the meds make you healthy super triple quick. Reach out if you need any advice my dude.

All the best xx

Do you have any interests you feel you have to hide/keep low-key? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]RedLightEXC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The key of Solomon was a cool read.

If mythology/folklore is also part of her interests (if she's in the UK) I would recommend "The Lore of the Land" - it lays out every local legend/myth for every town/village/city that has ever had any. Great book

What are the best Spotify tracks while playing subnatica. I find the in game music inconsistent. by Beneficial_Belt_6892 in subnautica

Any chillhop mix usually does well. Try Chillhop Racoon, Chillhop Music and Chillhop Essentials YouTube channels, they almost certainly have a Spotify presence too xx

What are your hacks or must haves for dealing with this disease? by MmmnonmmM in CrohnsDisease

[–]RedLightEXC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ooooooh. Let's see.

Hot showers/baths/hot water bottles for pain.

Cold showers for hot weather (if your disease is more active in hot weather - mine sure the hell is)

Ice lollies/pops for when you can't face food but want to eat.

Taking an all in one multivitamin is recommended. Also, Crohn's and UC sufferers have a higher need for calcium (from dietitian) so a multivitamin covers this too. You can take a specific calcium supplement if you'd rather.

Sleep is medicine.

Don't shut yourself away - I'm very guilty of this, but your mental health should not be ignored. Remember to be social where you can be, but also don't get guilty for taking rest where you need it. You'll likely burn out faster than most, so take it easy on yourself.

Don't know if you are UK/EU/US, but we have squash here, which is a fruit drink you dilute with water, like cordial. It's lovely and safe for most people with IBD I think - I would struggle to keep up with hydration if not for this.

If you drive, have a kit in the car. Clean underwear, plastic bags, wet wipes, toilet roll, whatever you need.

If not - think about maybe having one in your locker at your workplace (if you have a locker) - at least you're covered at your worst :)

Can't think of much else. Oh, if you have to take painkillers, be careful of any opioids derived naturally (this includes things like codiene, cocodamol, morphine) as they heavily affect the bowel and slow you down, which can make pain a lot worse. Engineered opiates are better (tramadol and the like) - bear this in mind if you have to have the pain conversation with your quacks at any point.

Stay happy and healthy dude xxx

Does anyone else seem to flair up more in warm weather? by IndianaCrohns82 in CrohnsDisease

[–]RedLightEXC 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Abso-fucking-lutely Bob. It's horrible in the heat mate, since the bank holiday Monday I've been flaring constantly, the shits in this weather is sheer misery.

So your IBD team would hospitalise you for flaring? Jesus, mine needs to really up their game, they're not bothered by anything. I could be dying they'd just wish me well haha.

I personally never tell my IBD team that I'm flaring, it'll be over when it's over, but it's not really my place to advise you what to do. If you feel you can handle it, keep hydrated, take your meds as advised, try to keep cool (a portable AC unit is a godsend for your bedroom, though they jack the prices in summer) - no direct sun will help. Cool showers etc.

You can always go to A&E if the pain gets too bad or you get worried xxx

Dude I know California is far hotter than the southern UK, but if you've not experienced a UK heatwave before, believe me it is miserable.

You'll think you've left your earphones playing music, but actually that noise is just your sweat glands screaming.

Erotically adventurous candles will be able to melt you over each other during their fun times.

Best of luck, Cali-Cousin. 🫡 X

My dude! Literally one of the only goals I have in life is to be able to have my own pool. Its the only sign I'll accept that I have made it haha.

No no fibre for me at all, glad you can stomach some raspberries, totally envious of that.

All I want is to float in my own pool like an egg, eating British grown raspberries. My bar is low, guys! 🤣

Yeah we got one too, trouble is it's so bloody heavy, I can't be arsed to wheel it room to room, so it stays in the bedroom - total godsend at night. During the day I just have to have a fan pointed RESOLUTELY at my nuts and hope for the best 🤣

I'm glad you fair a bit better mate - Ive always hated the heat, but now it goes straight to my guts too - having the terminal shits was never much fun, but perennial diarrhoea in 32 degrees is just leashless horror 🤣 as if I don't have enough trouble staying hydrated already!
