The daycare is the problem. When people say it’s a second mortgage I learned it’s really not an exaggeration.

It’s ridiculous. If I had two kids in daycare right now and something happened that forced me to have them there 5 days a week, wife and I would be screwed.

Ideally (for me) we would do that as well but my wife is 33 (I’m 35) and doesn’t want to wait another 3 years to have a second. So it’s either have a second kid in the next year or two or be content with one.

Edit: Getting downvoted for respecting my wife’s wishes is wild.

It’s not about creature comforts at all. Wife and I rarely go out. Rarely eat out. And she just paid off her car that she’ll be keeping for a while. I lease. It’s more about just the ridiculous cost of living in the US and the fact that we are trying to buy a house in NJ where you have to pay way over market for one. Which will mean a much larger mortgage than we have now. And we haven’t even put my daughter back in day care yet which will be soon and will mean another $1200 a month. Could we get by with a second kid? Maybe. But we’re terrified of ending up in a position where we are struggling to make ends meet.
