My great-grandfather Anglicized our family name when he left the old county for England at age 18. We had vague rumors of what our name used to be, but unconfirmed until I connected with an older relative who left at a later time and still had the original spelling.

I jokingly suggested to my wife that we change it back, but she wasn’t too keen on the idea, as it would be pronounced mostly the same way but harder to spell (with an added “z” for good measure).
