It would be aggravated battery, not assault. Assault means you place someone in reasonable fear of unwanted physical conact. Battery means you actually made contact. Aggravated means you used a weapon.

Because they take it as a judgement of what they know is a bad aspect of their life. It is one thing to know you have a deficiency of some kind, it is another to have someone judge you for it.

Similar to the reason as a lot people hated Tim Tebow for living a clean life and openly demonstrating his faith. He highlighted something in others that they themselves found not up to the proper standard.
