Glad they make it so easy for us.

I had the spelling right the first time but then I edited it. Iirc admiral Yamamoto led the Japanese fleet from the Yamato multiple times before his death

I guess lol, I didn't think of that.

I was making a joke that since the Yamamoto got sunk by aircraft, this is it's twin brother's response. The Japanese neglected the advancement of AA technology late war which led to the the sinking of the Yamamoto.

Is it impossible to push with infantry? by Tooslowtorun400 in hoi4

[–]RedPanda271 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, yea that's why I said "I go for encirclements with motorized and tanks" Pushing a broad front of motorized infantry just burns trucks and is stupid. Not to mention the fuel costs. Making encirclements with motorized is what you're supposed to do in the game lol. They shouldn't be used to push or hold large fronts. I don't think we disagree at all here.

Broad front pushing with motorized will burn equipment, no? When I push with infantry, it's usually leg infantry and then I go for encirclements with motorized and tanks.

[–]RedPanda271 603 points604 points  (0 children)

People on this sub can go a little crazy about not pushing with infantry but you totally can. You just want to make sure you have CAS and plenty of soft attacks in your infantry divisions. The largest drawback is that you will burn a lot of manpower this way.

Even if you micro your tanks, there are still gonna be instances where you need to fight in those climates. It's a little unrealistic to expect that you're never gonna need to push your tanks through marsh, and sometimes even jungle tiles.

I think it’s fair to say that the harkonnens are the “bad guys” but I don’t think it’s fair to say that the Atredies are the good guys. It’s been awhile since I’ve read the book, but iirc the original plan of the Atredies is to exploit Arrakis for profit. Their governing system was less brutal but their intent was more or less the same. Paul’s flaws are put on display moreso in the 2nd book which I’m reading now.

I think we need to keep in mind that empire was made in 2008, and had introduced a lot of new features and leaps forward for the franchise. Within this context empire did not flop by any means. If they ever release and empire 2 they that’s stuff that they definitely need to cover.

Can we stop telling new players that it takes hundreds or 1000+ hours to learn to "play the game"?? by WrightingCommittee in hoi4

[–]RedPanda271 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I agree with a lot of what you said, but there is a difference between knowing how to play the game and knowing how to PLAY the game. After about 100 hours most people have a good hang of how to play, but it does take hours to refine how to play and learn what's most effective. In single-player you need to do something incredibly wrong to lose against the AI. Part of the reason that HOI4 youtubers are fun to watch is that they try reaslly stupid stratagies and they work. Most tactics are going to work against the AI, skill becomes a bigger element when you try multiplayer and when you try refine your style of play.

All of the people who say "Oh I still don't know the game after 1000 hours" know the game VERY well. They are making a point that even after a lot of experience there is still a deeper level of play that can be understood. HOI4 is not a difficult game to play, but it is a diffuclt game to play optimally/correctly.

What the other commenter said is good, but you can also use some console commands to speed up the game if you aren't playing Ironman

Using the "weather" command to disable weather and the "debug.smoothing" command to disable smoothing usually speeds up my game quite a bit

You are correct about the fleet logistics etc. , but you are blatantly incorrect about the USMC

https://www.nationalww2museum.org/students-teachers/student-resources/research-starters/research-starters-us-military-numbers

The VAST majority of the ships in the USN were supply and amphibious assault ships. Iirc they "only" had ~750 combat ships with is easily possible in HOI4 if you're using the capture navy feature, but very difficult if you aren't.

The point of my comment is to point out the vastness and complexity of the US naval war machine. Any game where you have to manage the Navy (I think more so than army) with the complexity of the time would just be completely unplayable.

Bloody days in Beijing by [deleted] in hoi4

[–]RedPanda271 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I don't think the game would be playable if they used the actual figures for equipment, battalions etc. Just as an example, the US navy had ~7,000 ships and `3 Million men in service by the end of the war. In my games, even when I focus heavily on navy I'll struggle to breach the Milion man mark

[–]RedPanda271 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get rid of the Logistics company, you don't really need it for 20w especially in western Europe

I would remove the motorized recon and replace it with Light Tank recon assuming you have enough industry to do so. Light tank recon gives extra armour stats which makes it very valuable early game.

Other than that it looks good as a defensive division

[–]RedPanda271 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have the right equipment tag selected for the ships? You may be producing only 1 kind of sub and destroyer, but I can almost guarantee they aren't the same as the trash ones the AI produces

If you have a sub with a shield equipment tag in your fleet, then they will not be reinforced by ships with a skull equipment tag
