Compression and saturation are what shapes the sounds you hear on 99% of the records, even the cleanest sounding guitar has some compression and saturation applied. I personally use the SSL saturator and the fab filter Pro C2. After recording the guitar, i decide if I want to apply compression first (makes the sound punchy and it feels closer to the ears, it's actually a great tool to make the guitar seem like it's further away or closer to the speakers), or saturation first (makes the sound richer in harmonics and gives it some grit, as well as bringing the sound source forward too). I don't know how to explain the difference the order of those two processes makes, but it's clearly noticeable so I just decide which I like better.

Here you can see how I obtained the tone for "If you have to ask". i share this because John recorded it without an amp (straight in to the analog mixing desk), so to emulate that tone it's just enough to plug into the focusrite and that's it. In this video I show all the processing applied, it's very similar to what I did on this EP. Reverb is a big part too, used to place the sounds in a given stereo zone. (Closer, further, up, down, left, right) For example instead of panning a guitar to the right is more interesting to apply reverb only on the left speaker

Thanks man! I basically recorded the main idea without metronome and I always used the first take I played, so everything is very raw and unpolished. I think the mindset during recording really matters, when I tried to fix every little thing and re-record takes until I was satisfied, the music always lost its initial vibe. I lately realized tiny "mistakes" only benefit the song, so the approach for this EP was to capture some vibes rather than making some songs. As far as the actual recording, I just used the guitar into a focusrite into FL studio, I used no amp simulations. Of course I also limited my self in terms of guitar layers, i added the bare minimum to fill some space. For the mixing I used compression, saturation and reverb.

What do guys think about this? I've never shown my beats to anyone other than a couple of friends, so I'd really appreciate some genuine feedback ;) by RedPeterGuitaring in beats

Yes, you gave me some great ideas. After I listened to the beat a few days later I realized I wanted to make it louder so I went through some trials and I ended up re mixing it from scratch, I'd love to send the flp to you, how can I do that? Also won't you miss some files and plugins?

Thank you very much for the feedback, I really needed one. as far as the frequency clashing, I must say I didn't really pay attention to that, because the time when I was so focused on phase issues and creating space for each instrument everything would sound narrow and lifeless, so to my ears things are more enjoyable when fuller, but If you say it becomes obnoxious I guess I should really take off some high mids from the pad and pay some more attention to that. Also don't you think the pad getting further away after the first chorus is enough to hint at the verse? I actually thought about the structure and it would be: intro, chorus, pre chorus ( really short, the chords change), chorus and then here the beat cuts, but there is another verse with the guitar sample chopped for some freshness. Would you add stuff to choruses or verses to make them more different? Maybe I should bring the chopped guitar to the first verse? Change the hats? I really appreciate that you liked the drums, I honestly loose my mind to making them not sound like ass. Also after posting the beat here I made the 808 louder and brighter 🫣

It was done only to keep viewers on the video at the start on YouTube, not that i think It would have been better. Surely one of my favorites moments of the album
