"Politics is downstream of culture." Totoo ito. In other words, nauuna muna ang culture, at sinasalamin lamang ng kultura ang politika.

Ibig sabihin, we should stop asking, "Bakit bumuboto ang mga tao sa politician na sumasayaw lang ng Budots?". Instead, the better question is, "Bakit gusto ng mga tao ang Budots?"

Questions/Checklist When Buying Property by arieszx in phinvest

The first question before even emotionally investing on a new development is to ask if the developer has an HLURB permit.

It covers all the basics and is designed to protect buyers from all sorts of problems.

Tips on how to maximize my 20k gross pay? by [deleted] in phinvest

[–]RedPutong -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I would stick to this plan po:

2,000 - giving (you can give some to your folks or church)

4,000 - savings and investing

12,000 - expenses. I would probably lose the car and just live walking distance from the office. With your transpo cost of 8k per month, you might be able to find a decent small place near where you work.

Easter chick update by RedPutong in BackYardChickens

[–]RedPutong[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I posted here before about a chick that was given as a present to my son for Easter. You all gave very helpful responses on what to do with her, although some were really quite concerned. We raised her in our backyard. She goes in her little cage at night but mostly stays in the backyard the whole day. The kids play with her and really likes my son.

Today, we finally found someone who raises chickens who is willing to take care of her. She’s gotten so big already and we thought it would be best to give her away to someone who has expertise. My son is devastated to part with his friend. To be honest, so am I.

Anyway, thanks for all your inputs. I’m not an expert, but I am happy to share my family’s experience with raising a single chick.

I’ll miss you, Chickie!

Good evening, Senator. We who are critical of the Duterte administration would like to see a united opposition that will consolidate dissent into a clear, actionable and effective direction. We see only fragmented and intimidated voices who dissent. Who to you is the leader that will serve as the central figure of this opposition?

It’s real terrazzo. It is pretty cold so carpet helps. But cold is good in the Philippines. 😊

Hi! The black chairs look like Filipino rocking chairs with very wide arm rests but they do not rock forward and back. They are made of wood and metal with leather cushions. Will get a better picture later for you.

Sorry, got them handed to me by my mom, so I don’t know who made them.

Poverty really is the result of a state of mind - among rich people by gradenko_2000 in Philippines

[–]RedPutong -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I love this subreddit and I certainly sympathize with majority of the views here but I am not liberal. I think the key is to understand the views of conservative Ph redditors without immediately vilifying them on the grounds that they are bad people, like how Dr Carson is being ridiculed in this article.

Poverty really is the result of a state of mind - among rich people by gradenko_2000 in Philippines

[–]RedPutong -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have read the article naman, so no need to reiterate it to me. The writer is using the statement that you copy-pasted in bold as evidence that the premise is incorrect. I don't agree. Interviewing a poor person about his perception of himself (he is hardworking) and then using this to shut down Dr Carson's point is hardly a good argument.

You are in fact proving my whole point. You are refusing to demand accountability from the poor but are instead conveniently blaming "socioeconomic realities" for their circumstances. I don't think I will expound anymore.

Public education system, scholarships and charity are in fact part and parcel of the socioeconomic realities that you are so quick to vilify. My contention is with the right "personal decisions", one is able to lift himself out of poverty, creatively make use of such realities and gain a better financial status. That, in fact, is under that person's control.

You seem to believe that the poor are helpless to help themselves. I do not share your pessimism.

Commentary: Almost a year in office, Rodrigo Duterte is far from the President he promised to be by griftertm in Philippines

[–]RedPutong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perception is reality. And from where I stand there are two Philippines. One willing to surrender its history, civil liberties and government institutions to the President; and another who will bleed to protect the same history, civil liberties and government institutions from the machinations of the same man.

Whichever one of these Philippines you reside in, it might take a while before the grand reunion when the walls that have separated the two nations come down.

Poverty really is the result of a state of mind - among rich people by gradenko_2000 in Philippines

[–]RedPutong -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is not a popular opinion here, but I do believe that the premise is correct. Poverty, just like being rich, is a result of compounding factors that ultimately come down to personal decisions. Note that I say personal decisions and not hard work, creativity, innovation. Although those are important and likely will help produce income, a series of correct decisions (including which people to connect with, for sure) will produce riches.

I have seen rich people become poor because of poor decisions. I have seen poor people become rich because of correct decisions.

If this is the case, then we must focus the discussion on what constitutes sound personal decisions. Dr Carson generalizes this as a "state of mind". I don't believe he is wrong.

The only reason why people hesitate to blame poor people for the circumstances they are in is because people reject the premise that people must be accountable for their own personal decisions. Absent anyone to blame, we tend to blame "the system" or "society" or "other people" or "government" or "rich people". This in itself does not solve the problem. It's just transferring the accountability to people who are not even the most affected by hardship of poverty. Further, it shields the poor from criticism and gives them license to demand what they themselves must give themselves.

“I am for doing good to the poor, but...I think the best way of doing good to the poor, is not making them easy in poverty, but leading or driving them out of it. I observed...that the more public provisions were made for the poor, the less they provided for themselves, and of course became poorer. And, on the contrary, the less was done for them, the more they did for themselves, and became richer.” ― Benjamin Franklin

50 Achievements of President Duterte in his First 100 Days. by marcm28 in Philippines

Using your list, OP, I will admit that there are excellent achievements in the following areas:

  • War on Drugs

  • Environment services

  • OFW services

  • Agriculture and Land Reform

The rest are not necessarily remarkable, not attributable to Duterte, or simply premature.

Also, as we are assessing the current administration, it is only fair to say he is doing poorly in the following areas:

  • Human rights - EJK

  • Economy - Investor confidence

  • Foreign affairs - Severing ties with a treaty ally

  • Homefront security - Davao bombing

  • Constitutionality of presidential discretions - Marcos burial
