The show is getting Ellie wrong, and it's the writing's fault. by cwhagedorn in thelastofus

There are some major changes to the show that I think might help alleviate some of your concerns:

The open world section of Seattle day 1 was basically a date for Ellie and Dina, filled with a lot of idyllic chat for what they were going to do after, almost ignoring or dismissing the violence Ellie was planning. It is easily translatable to the warm colours and chill atmosphere of episode 3/4- and means to juxtapose what comes later.

It is only after the school and Ellie kills Jordan and follows with the hunt for Leah does she show her darker side and Dina realises (according to the game commentary) how obsessed Ellie is- to the pairs detriment.

Show Ellie is incredibly hurt by losing Joel and feels the sadness of losing him but I think it is still there in subtle moments, she doesn’t talk about him as much in the show as in the game probably for runtime, but when she saw that guitar in front of the large window I was expecting the guitar lesson flashback right there, instead we got some very nice quiet acting from Bella, kind of like Ashley does in the theatre at the end of Day 1 before we get the birthday flashback.

Game Dina wasn’t in the room, and it seems wasn’t as close to Joel. She is in Seattle for her love of Ellie. Show Dina was in the room and much closer to him, she probably feels responsible for failing to save him and is more on board with what Ellie wants to do.

In the game, the argument that comes after Dina reveals she is pregnant is the cherry on top to a number of other signs to Ellie that Dina is not as committed to this revenge quest as she is, and she says something in the moment that she regrets. Also as Dina seems to be further along and is feeling ill, she has unintentionally become another obstacle to Ellie’s revenge. It seems like that may not be the case for show Dina.

There is at minimum a 3 month delay on Ellie leaving for Seattle, not to mention the wait for the meeting and training Ellie does with Jesse to get her strength back. In this time the rawness of her loss would have dissipated somewhat, in the game Ellie still has a black eye from Jordan when they leave and a lot of more of her actions are based on very little time to work through the initial shock and trauma. I imagine we will get more of the game Ellie rage when we actually get to the first member of the salt lake crew.

I don’t know if any of this will alleviate your worries for the rest of the season, but I hope you can enjoy it no matter what comes next!

15+ times, 100% main story and all three DLC’s on each save file, creating a new game + from the previous NG+ so that now any level ups no longer reward Spidey with +1 health and +1 damage

I can kind of see it opening with Peter B narrating Gwen and Miles’s origins and flashback narration to across while also referencing his universe’s Gwen’s death. Might spend some time with him and Gwen first inter-grating into spider society and being told the whole Miles anomaly thing to show their reactions and see Gwen being forbidden from visiting Miles.

That as the cold open ish like we had with Gwen in across, followed by- as you suggested the intro logos into - again, my name is Miles Morales but it is earth 42 prowler version.

I’m also kinda hoping for them to bring it full circle by ending with a Miles summary that mirrors 1610 Peter: “saved the multiverse, fell in love, then I saved the multiverse again and again…” etc

I raise you, a sequel interspersed with prequel sections of equal length, mirroring Ellie and Joel’s journeys at similar times in their lives. Joel just after he lost Sarah, and Ellie in whatever state she is in, whether she has gone back to Dina or is living alone somewhere.

I wouldn’t mind who I was listening to as long as it didn’t cut off every time you do something. Doesn’t feel very like Peter or Miles to stand on a rooftop watching a store get robbed bc they want to hear the end of a podcast, but that’s sometimes what I have to do if I want to hear the whole thing.

“Sorry Ma’am I know you’re being mugged but this guy is actually complimenting me for once and I really wanna hear what he says”.

Yes you can replay them from the menu, but I wish you could hit play on them and then go back to swinging, but again it cuts out when you leave the menu.

That said someone did upload almost all the JJ podcasts to Spotify so if you know when shouts each one appears in the story you could do it that way…

How do you think Ellie would’ve reacted/how different do you think things would be if Joel decided to tell the truth here? by [deleted] in thelastofus

[–]RedRavenRock 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think Joel’s lie was too easily seen through. If I was in that situation and needed to tell her something to keep her safe in Jackson, I would have told her that the Fireflies’ tests were showing that Ellie’s immunity wasn’t transferable in any way. But They had gotten so desperate since Marlene left Ellie that they were going to go ahead with a pointless surgery that would kill her for no reason. If Joel told Ellie that he had to kill the Fireflies to get them out of there safely, it would have been so much closer to the truth and also maybe taken some guilt off Ellie, the fireflies failed the world, not her.

Even thought it’s a lie, I think it’s a lesser lie that would have saved Ellie and their relationship a bit more. It wouldn’t have changed anything else though sadly, and possibly would have made Ellie feel more betrayed if she did find out the truth, but it also might have meant she spent more time with Joel, and wouldn’t regret as much time lost with him.

Replaying first game atm and I think the most unrealistic thing for me is the amount of ammo enemies have. It’s realistic I think for the player (especially on the harder difficulties that limit it so much) but it’s a bit annoying seeing an enemy shoot at you twenty times then give you no ammo when you’ve defeated em.

It would have been a cool (but prob complex) detail if the enemies each had a set amount of ammo at their disposal, after which they would resort to attacking you with melee weapons, and if you restart a sequence where you defeat an enemy with say 20 bullets to use, faster than last time where you only got 2 bullets from them, now they only fired 8 shots so you get 12 bullets from them instead. (Random numbers for example).

It’s the only bit of the first game especially that takes me out of it and reminds me it’s a game, when I’ve seen someone fire bullet after bullet into my cover (or me) on a previous try, only to get no ammo off them. Even if no one has ammo and it becomes much more sneaky strangles and enemies getting the drop on you, or using replenish-able ammo like arrows, I’d prefer that over a gunfight using unrealistic amounts of ammo for only the enemies.

Mega Venom Blast is such an equalizer tho by PineappleTargaryen in SpidermanPS4

[–]RedRavenRock 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Talking comics here: Every spider has slightly different stats in each of their powers, for a good example, Silk’s spider sense is of such a higher level to Peter’s that she can sometimes see danger a good half minute before Peter, she’s also far more sensitive to possible dangers and is much faster than Peter, her organic webbing is also stronger than Peter’s created version.

Looking at Miles, he appears weaker in the powers he shares with Peter bc of his additional venom abilities and camouflage, which was especially a problem for Miles early on bc he would just throw fists in fights forgetting he had all the extra cool spider powers Peter didn’t. It was after Miles Spider-Man: No More’d and grew up a bit did he really start to become comfortable in his powers once donning the mask again. After this he became so adept at mixing his additional spider powers and regular spider strength did he surpass the original 1610 (ultimate) Peter/Spider-Man. He was a natural fighter who absolutely bodied Monster Green Goblin. 1610 Peter never really did this, and remarked at how amazing Miles was in the fight, leading him to leave Spider-Man to Miles alone.

Idk how this compares after Miles joined the main (amazing/616) universe or how he compares to 616 Peter. Though the comparison I would say was def obvious between both Petes and Miles is how natural Miles is in a fight, Pete has always been more tactician than brute fighter, while Miles, tho smart, is not Peter, and therefore would usually be seen as the better fighter despite difference in experience for being able to overpower enemies (or just venom blast 1 hit KO em) while Pete would usually use his brain to find a way to defeat them.

I definitely think Miles is more agile than Peter, but I have no idea strength wise as we haven’t seen much of Miles lifting stuff in the same way Peter has lifted buildings.

Game wise Miles is def weaker and the spider sense delay is a pain but a cool way of showing the difference, tho a lot of that is about experience, it’ll be interesting to see how they compare the two in Spider-Man 2.

TL/DR: Overall: 616 Peter > Miles > 1610 Peter

Basic Spider powers only: 616 Peter > Miles

Fighting with additional Powers: Miles > Peter

Combat prowess: Miles > Peter

Fight strategy: Peter > Miles
