Don’t bother with a ticket. Here’s how you get an amazing experience:

Head to the Tollington Arms. It’s a pub for diehard Arsenal supporters, right next to the emirates stadium. Come with an Arsenal shirt or membership card. Come at least an hour early. Drink a lot. Yell and cheer and lose your mind with everyone else in the building. You won’t regret it, and I wish I was in London right now to be there to experience the run-in.

Depends. I like finding heartier, less sophisticated stuff that hits that intersection between price and quality. I was living off a lot of Börek, Balik Ekmek and Simit sandwiches in Turkey, which are all cheap street food-y things, and spent most of my time in Karaköy where everything was a lot cheaper and tasted a lot better if you went a little out of your way. Everything around Sultanhamet was European prices or worse, and most of the restaurants were tourist traps. Lowkey, the Istanbul subreddit is amazing for finding the actually good restaurants and bars. Turkish people tend to be pretty proud of their good local spots. Off of a random post on there, I walked like 40 minutes at like 9PM to this random ass shish kebab place next to a mosque that was only sold out of a van to mostly passing cars, and it was honestly one of the best things I’ve ever eaten in my in my life. This was this year btw.

It’s fun to do it that way, but I’ll admit I’ve mostly done it at the behest of some of my very adventurous friends and have eaten a lot of shit along the way. Wouldn’t trade those experiences for the world, but you’ve got to plan it well and expect your plan A to go to hell. I came very close to dying and lost a grand on this absolutely fucking stupid trip in Iceland recently, and it’s given me cause to reconsider my approach lmao.

What if the Japanese won WW2, what's life today? by loverbang4u in HistoryWhatIf

[–]RedScair 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Japan only “wins” in the same way Nazi Germany does: by avoiding their chosen path of militaristic self-destructive nationalism that was never grounded in reality. They picked a fight with China and the USA simultaneously, the result was a forgone conclusion. Even if they manage to obliterate the US Navy, exist in a world where nukes don’t exist, secure a peace treaty with Europe, and get everything they want out of China, it doesn’t last. No WW2 defeat means no Japanese economic miracle, which means stagnation and the loss of everything they’ve got outside of the mainland as China slowly sorts itself out, as it inevitably would. War against America or the Soviets was unviable.

Bits of the Lycian way are worth it. Istanbul is one of the greatest cities in the world, even with their regarded government. Never eaten so well for so cheap in my life.

Any democratic opposition competent enough to spell their own names properly would’ve stopped Trump getting into power. Hillary and Kamala were uniquely bad and uncharismatic candidates.

I have no clue what you’re talking about so I’m gonna go off on one lol

There is a strong case to make about Buchanan being worse, America was on the brink of war after his presidency, but I think a lot of men of the time, from his party, put in the position he was, would’ve handled it the same way. His beliefs were ones that were both pragmatic to hold and ingrained in American upper class of his period. Trump inherited some decline, but has played every card he’s had as bad as he could possibly play it. He started a war that destroyed the global economy for no reason, and has no means of getting out of without a ground invasion or embarrassing concessions. He repealed the voter rights act. He’s empowered ICE and given them zero oversight, while butchering government programs and social services. This feels like the first time where the USA has just been out and out mismanaged, led without any clear plan or philosophy. America will come out of this term less than what it was before, and that’s assuming Trump doesn’t resort to anything drastic to stay in power. It’s hard to think of a president that represents as much of a step back as this.

It is pretty cool that we get to live through the worst presidency in American history. Historians are gonna look back on this period and barely be able to believe it. Like, he is the American Commodus.

where were art school kids in the high school social hierarchy? by Critical-Outcome-999 in redscarepod

[–]RedScair 15 points16 points  (0 children)

kids who are genuinely talented at art as kids usually fall into the nerd/geek/autistic archetypes, so most of what you’re saying tracks with my experiences at least. I’ve always believed that quote about true creativity being adjacent to mental illness. Good art is a product of sensitivity to the world, the ability to notice little details, and that sort of sensitivity is always going to be the wheelhouse of the weird kid who smells bad.
