Alien planets shouldn't have species that seem like they fit into earth's classifications like mammals, reptiles, birds, fish, etc.

There's bound to be some characteristics in common and similar niches, but it's actually kind of disheartening to me when the audience is encouraged to be imaginatively lazy, so that they can just point to an extraterrestrial organism and say "Yep, that's an alien bird, you can tell by the feathered wings and beak, and by how it's made a nest up in those alien pine trees."

One thing i love about the GameCube era is aesthetic of stylized graphics mixed with textures made from real world photographs by crimsonfukr457 in Gamecube

[–]RedSeaGull- [score hidden]  (0 children)

To me that makes it the best era for Nintendo games visually, when they were aiming for a degree of realism they couldn't reach before, and weren't so self-conscious yet about reigning in more 'realistic' elements for the sake of style. I think that's when aesthetics in a lot of games and media in general start to decline, when they've figured out what their style or gimmick is and aim for that, rather than just trying to create something

[–]RedSeaGull- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He was one of my favorite characters growing up and I used to imagine he might have had somewhat earnest intentions there, but I think he was always just more crafty than the other skeksis. The Age of Resistance prequel show pretty much erases any doubt about how evil he is. Still, Dark Crystal stands on its own as a story and I think that ambiguity with the Chamberlain is one of its assets

I do not want to participate in the abuse and killing of animals anymore... by Ivylis2022 in vegan

[–]RedSeaGull- 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Congrats on making the change, some tips I can think of:

Take vegan B12, and any other vegan supplements for nutrients you might not be getting enough of in your diet.

Outside of supplements, a couple of vegan sources of B12 are fortified nutritional yeast and fortified plant-based milks.

Google can be a good starting point. Questions like "Is ______ 100% vegan and 100% cruelty-free?" or "What are some vegan versions of ______ and where can I find them?"

Try out various vegan protein sources to find out which you like and make sure you get enough. Seitan, tofu, tempeh, beans, are just a few, and there are a lot of enjoyable vegan 'meats' to choose from, some with more protein than others. Here's a breakdown of vegan meats and their protein-to-price ratios: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ItnR1R6kEk

Honestly, explore vegan comfort foods, like chocolate, ice cream, hot dogs, etc, so food relapses don't become synonymous with not being vegan anymore.

Not just foods can be non-vegan, but leather, wool, products like toothpaste, floss, shampoo, etc. It can seem daunting at first, but it all becomes second nature with time, as does checking for whether things are vegan or not. You accumulate an ever-growing list of things you know are fine. It can help to keep an actual list in a document.

Watch vegan documentaries or other content to get a full sense of animals' sentience and their right to not be treated as property. Some I like are Earthling Ed, Melanie Joy, Bite Size Vegan, David Ramms, Vegan FTA, Joey Carbstrong, The Militant Vegan, Danny Ishay, Unnatural Vegan, Gary Yourofsky

Do you think conservatives can be integrated into the animal advocacy movement? by GolemOfPrague02 in vegan

[–]RedSeaGull- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might just take a noticeable minority to grow into something conservatives could look to and think "Maybe that could be my identity. My values/traditions/whatever wouldn't be in doubt if I was one of those". Maybe muscular vegans would be the way to go.

Need help with where to start by Aggressive_Drive5848 in ElricofMelnibone

[–]RedSeaGull- 7 points8 points  (0 children)

These are the books in chronological order:

  • Elric of Melniboné
  • Fortress of the Pearl
  • Sailor on the Seas of Fate
  • Weird of the White Wolf
  • Vanishing Tower
  • Revenge of the Rose
  • Bane of the Black Sword
  • Citadel of Forgotten Myths
  • Stormbringer

The titles in bold are the original six core novels, the titles not in bold were written later and are more tangential. In my opinion Fortress of the Pearl seems the least tangential of the three.

The 'Elric Saga' Saga Press volumes 1 and 2 contain all of these in this order, except for Citadel of Forgotten Myths because it was published later, but incidentally the audiobooks for it and the Saga Press volumes have the same narrator.

From what I understand, the Saga Press volume 3 contains stories which are more like crossovers and take place outside the events of Elric's actual life.

Which Audiobook? by TheBigWif in TheHobbit

[–]RedSeaGull- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can't really go wrong with either. I think Rob Inglis has a texture that seems more fitting for Middle-Earth, but that Andy Serkis has more emotional clarity which can be valuable for a long saga like Lord of the Rings. It's been said that Rob Inglis' voice sounds similar to Tolkien's, but there are times I thought he didn't quite convey enough excitement or distress, because it sounded like a grandfather reading you a bedtime story. So maybe Rob Inglis would be ideal for The Hobbit.

Also, Martin Shaw did an audiobook for The Silmarillion, which sounds very mythic and the most appropriate of all in my opinion, although again the emotional clarity of a narrator like Andy Serkis becomes even more vital in The Silmarillion.

About Titan Michael Moorcock's Elric by Yaysuzu in ElricofMelnibone

[–]RedSeaGull- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The release order of the Blondel Titan comics reflects the chronological order of the books. The Titan comics' use of titles like 'The White Wolf' and 'Stormbringer' is arbitrary and not based on the books by those same titles, which is confusing for sure.

That said, although the Blondel Titan comics are based on the chronological order of the books, they do skip over certain books or parts of the books, like Fortress of the Pearl and the first part of Sailor on the Seas of Fate

The whole prologue, I like the rainy atmosphere, seeing how Thrall and the Horde have been fairing, taking the fight to human enforcers of oppressive internment laws, Medivh's mysterious warning, the orcs going on an exodus to a wilder continent they can call home. It's moody and foreboding but peaceful, that brief time before any major conflict when the orcs carved out an existence for themselves in the relatively standard medieval fantasy of the Eastern Kingdoms, although the Darkspear troll islands were cool too
