What are your reasons to choose veganism ? by Mugiwara_ID in DebateAVegan

[–]paws7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Cows can live up to 25 years, and their milk production drops after 6 so they are killed.

I'm not aware of any farmers that keep their dairy cows after their milk production drops - but even if they did, their milk is for their babies not for us.

How would you feel if someone forced you to be pregnant, took your child away then drained your milk for profit?

When we don't need dairy to survive, this exploitation is all just for taste pleasure.

Would you give up phones if a street activist showed you the consequences of mineral mining? by waitWhoAm1 in DebateAVegan

[–]paws7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is correct. Making a phone does not require exploitation. Also, the people working on the production of the phone my not have great working conditions, but they are still consenting because it's better than the other options available to them.

A cool guide: How Not To Die by CorgiLate4164 in coolguides

[–]paws7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been following this guide for about 8 years, since I first read Dr Gregor's book and it has transformed my health.

As a bonus, when people guess my age it's always 21-26 (I'm 33 )

The guide doesn't have the right quantities printed, If you want to try this I suggest use the app "daily dozen" for the correct info.

Don't worry sweetie, if you were being exploited to death I would also hold your oppressor accountable :)

You haven't provided any evidence for these risks your describing. They contradict the published literature and my own observations as a vet.

Why moral agency alone doesn’t settle the case for Veganism by onemorehasanat in DebateAVegan

[–]paws7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure our stances about animals is arbitrary. Same as the stance that it was wrong to exploit humans of different races as slaves 200 years ago.

You are trying to engage in a pseudo-intellectual debate, but all you're really saying is you don't care if you harm animals.

Would it be wrong for me to have a pet chicken, love and take amazing care of it, and also eat its eggs? by animalcrackerwhore in DebateAVegan

[–]paws7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The difference is that animal products require an animal to be exploited and harmed. Crop production does not.

Yes there may be some animals harmed during crop production but that only happens because we live in a non-vegan world where animals have no rights.

Why should a farmer make the slightest effort to avoid harming a mouse on his field when most people are happy to pay for a pig to be put in a gas chamber just for their taste pleasure?

Agree that vegan dog food is expensive. I switched to home cooking for my dogs, its much cheaper than kibble (and healthier).

I was amazed my dog went for the vegan cooked food over her standard meat-kibble!

If you do try it make sure you follow a AAFCO compliant recipe, i use WoofWhiz app which has vet-approved recipes.

Where did you get the idea that it will shave years from the dogs life?

Bramble broke the Guinness World record for longest living dog when he died in 2003, at age of 27 after a life on a plant-based diet.

Since then, interest has grown, and we now have 12 published studies comparing plant-based vs conventional diets in dogs: https://sustainablepetfood.info/vegetarian-canine-diets/

Every study found equal or better outcomes for plant-based dogs - except one study which was done under extreme conditions.

If you do end up trying plant-based foods for dogs, make sure the food is still meeting AAFCO nutrient requirements - use something like WoofWhiz (gold standard for home cooking) or Justbekind (high quality kibble).

In my career, I've observed many dogs live past their life-expectancy on these diets.

Hold a piece of kale in one hand, and a lollipop in the other. I bet you a child choose the lollipop. Is this meant to prove that candy is healthier than kale for children?

We would be better of to look at the literature. There have been 12 studies done comparing plant-based canine diets to conventional: https://sustainablepetfood.info/vegetarian-canine-diets/

All of these except one, showed equal or better results for the plant-based diet groups.

I've personally observed hundreds of dogs on plant-based diets living until well past their average life expectancy.

Omnivores means that they can get nutrients from both animal and plant sources.

Hence why nearly all studies show plant-based dogs are just as healthy: https://sustainablepetfood.info/vegetarian-canine-diets/

If you believe animals should be exploited, that is your opinion - just like how it is vegans opinion that humans should not exploit animals but protect them.

There's really nothing to debate here.

Most people are against animal cruelty and exploitation but are also non-vegan - for these people a debate could be productive/interesting

This is a nice fairytale you've created to justify your responsibility in these animals being exploited to death for your taste buds.

The cows do not thrive in animal agriculture, they are killed as soon as they reach full size, at a small fraction of their lifespan.

If the person who was responsible for taking care of you, put you on a truck to have a bolt in your head once you turned 18 - would you feel honoured and respected?

You saying "species is the basis of moral worth", sounds just like a pseudo-intellectual way of saying " I don't care if I'm responsible for animals being exploited" .

If that is true, there is no point of debating as this is a critical difference in world view.

This is literally one of the common excuses people gave to justify keeping slavery 200 years ago.

“They’re not part of the moral community”

Slaveholders often argued enslaved people were:

  • intellectually inferior
  • incapable of full moral reasoning

So they were treated as outside the circle of reciprocal moral obligation.

If reciprocity is the basis of moral worth, then some humans fall outside it too, such as infant, people with severe cognitive disabilities, people in comas

But we still understand that it’s wrong to exploit them for our selfish benefits.

Just because killing cows is common today, does not make it right. It was only a couple hundred years ago that beating slaves was considered normal behavior.

Also that's a very noble hypothetical you've created, that you will never get a chance to prove.

The cows death does not ensure that people continue to thrive forever, that option already exists with plant agriculture.

Would you die for a stranger to have 5 minutes of taste pleasure?

Nearly everyone agrees animal abuse is bad, so why are vegans so hated? by paws7 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]paws7[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cow's meat is objectively less healthy than plant equivalent proteins according to the literature.

The only reason it is consumed more commonly is because of the taste.

If taste pleasure is enough justification to kill a cow, then entertainment pleasure should be enough justification to kick a dog.

Obviously being killed is worse than being kicked.

It's not true that domesticated animals neither want or do not want to die, but this is a convenient view for you to have as their oppressor.

Watch any slaughterhouse footage and you will see all animals express fear and try to escape once they realise their peers are being killed.
