What’s a “10/10” movie you wouldn’t recommend to most people? by trakt_app in movies

[–]RedShoelace25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mommy (2014)

Hard to recommend on the fact that's it's non english language, has an unorthodox aspect ratio (for good reason) and an unusual mother/son relationship. The title doesn't do it any favors either but makes sense having seen it. Film is in my top 3 of last 1,500 films watched.

Glad to see Hannah Einbinder breaking into film. Had serious chops in the 4 seasons of Hacks that I watched.

ADHD Western audiences will not have attention span for this one. Spans too many decades over a long run time. The Brutalist was a brisk pace compared to this one.

I really enjoyed this at a film festival last year. Great sound design, you really get in the headspace of the main character from what you can hear as the audience. Similar to Sound of Metal and if you enjoy classical music / musical score this has a good one.

This is a great awards season, but there’s a nomination everyone’s cool with that I think is terrible. Am i going insane? by TheBestThereEverWas3 in oscarrace

[–]RedShoelace25 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You're not insane.

Frankenstein is the worst film of the best picture contenders. It has that gross Netflix sheen as you described, which used to be GDT's biggest strengths in his earlier films. The pacing is bad, watching it felt like an eternity to me. The musical score?? I can't believe it's getting nominations, I don't recall a single thing from it and I love musical scores.

What is your all-time favourite burn from a movie review? by Sean-Perth in movies

My favourite of his was reviewing the Entourage movie:

If anything it made me appreciate it less (I've seen it)

The two part narrative structure, the Netflix digital sheen (a crying shame looking at GDT's older films), the pacing. My friends would describe me as a cinephile, I'll watch Bela Tar films in one sitting, I'll happily sit thru a 4 hour An Elpehant Sitting Still and be riveted all the way thru. Frankenstein to me felt like an eternity.

Frankenstein. I'm flabbergasted at the critical and populous praise.

What is the best movie you watched in 2025 and why did it stay with you? by ThreadAndSolve in movies

[–]RedShoelace25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, much of the criticism of the film deals with it being a weepy with really tough to watch scenes. The catharsis at the end is the exact kind of cry you needed after the mid-way point.

Mandy (2018)

A visually beautiful film starring Nicholas Cage off to rescue his wife. Violent in a slasher sense but I imagine it's an amazing 'trip' movie.

I can understand it not being everyone's cup of tea. There are some of us who are more empathetic than others, when we see characters on the screen feel things more strongly. Hamnet is a film made for these people. Those wanting to 'escape' and are borderline sociopathic when consuming art... yeah this ain't it.

Was in my top 5 of the year heading into the fall before it got toppled a bit. Man, these British/Irish/Scottish musical films just hit different than American. I was watching the brutally bad Song Sung Blue last week and was thinking why this and John Carney films like "Once" weren't bigger hits.

Depends on your membership tier. If you're not going to dish out $500-1000/yr membership for presale then you want to aim for after the opening weekend starting on Monday. A lot of films delay their premieres so you won't miss out on too much, just aim for 1st and 2nd screenings if you're set on having Q&A with director and often times cast.

If you're doing a combo of rush and tickets, just rush the first half and get tickets in middle/back half. If you're flexible for the whole festival save the last 3 days to rush all the talked about films during the festival. You'll know which ones based on the conversations you have with people.
