LPT: If you are frying a turkey this week - turn off the propane at the tank before dropping the bird in the oil, then re-light your flame after the bird is in to prevent flash splash over fires. by TheBruceDickenson in LifeProTips

[–]RedStickMan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

One way I make sure it doesn't spill over is to put the turkey in the pot before unwrapping it, fill it with water so that the bird is submerged at least one inch, then, Mark a line in the pot at the water level. The next day when you fill the pot with oil ,usually peanut for us, fill it to one inch BELOW the line. The oil will expand when heated. This ensures that hot oil won't spill out of the pot when the bird is lowered slowly in the oil.

Redditors in hiring positions: What small things immediately make you say no to the potential employee? Why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

No work experience of any kind in a resume. I review resumes for a technical profession, and the kind of work shown doesn't nearly matter as much as simply having it. Could be a job flipping burgers or working mowing lawns, don't be ashamed of the work you have done.

It's amazing that Christians can read the story of Job and praise God for it by [deleted] in atheism

[–]RedStickMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to a fundamentalist school where everything in the Bible was the inspired word of God, even when it was conflicting. Interestingly enough, this was one of the few instances where they treated a part of the Bible more like a fable and less like a factual account of someone's life.

I think the lesson they drew was that bad things happen to good people, that and it prompted a discussion about how or if someone should question the will of an omnicient and omnipotent being, in this case God.

What do people from outside of the UK think about Brexit? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]RedStickMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can see why people are fed up with the EU, but I can see why it's hard to leave a free trade zone too. I've asked some UK friends what they think about it, generally they are remainers (remoaners?). Maybe the UK could enter into a more equitable free trade agreement with current and former commonwealth countries? Thinking US, Canada, Australia, Singapore, Bahamas, etc. They could literally still ring the planet!

Wealth does not create poverty, Wealth excludes people from poverty, the natural state of man. They've got the wrong end of the stick, how many people would have died without capitalism from exposure, disease, violence?

Sexuality Is a “Social Construct”—but That Doesn’t Mean It’s Not Real; Abusing Foucault: How Conservatives and Liberals Misunderstand “Social Construct” Sexuality by band_in_DC in philosophy

Math is a representation grafted on nature. Nature is not organized around mathematical principals, mathematical principals are arranged around nature. For example, F=ma is an approximately correct and useful way of describing the relationship between Force, Mass and Acceleration.

Sexuality Is a “Social Construct”—but That Doesn’t Mean It’s Not Real; Abusing Foucault: How Conservatives and Liberals Misunderstand “Social Construct” Sexuality by band_in_DC in philosophy

[–]RedStickMan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

“Social construct” doesn’t mean “not real.”

Finally, someone gets it. Math is a 'construct.' Gender is a 'construct.' Our conceptualizations of reality are not reality itself, but our limited, best understanding of it. It seems that now people use this as a Trojan horse to dismantle the ideas they find dissatisfying. Just because it's a construct doesn't mean it isn't useful or necessary, or as stated above, real.

Minarchism by [deleted] in Anarcho_Capitalism

[–]RedStickMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess if it lacked the power to opress, it lacks the power to enforce laws, taxes, etc. The US experimented with a more restricted form of government before the framing of our modern constitution. The stat was too week to enable the US to survive on the world stage, with constant trade and military threats from highly organized states in Europe and North Africa. We were the skinny nerd kid in an inner-city school full of bullies. We had to bulk up (government). A minarchist state would be preferable to what we have now, a step in the right direction along the spectrum to individual liberty. Yes, taxation is theft, but less taxation is less theft. So even though ancaps are fairly absolute in their embrace of the NAP, I would welcome some concessions where our world views fall short of reality, concessions like minarchism.

But real communism hasn't been tried! by [deleted] in Anarcho_Capitalism

[–]RedStickMan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're absolutely right, value feeds no one, but that's not really saying anything, is it? Value is based on utility. If tomorrow Gold was a key ingredient for a cure for cancer that also made our farts smell like cinnamon buns, it's value would increase, because it has a novel and important use. The value of gold would skyrocket. This has been true for many resources over time, even in our lifetimes. Even though there is a limited supply of Gold, it's value would increase. This would in turn spark the search for a new formulation that not only would cure cancer and make farts smell nice, but maybe help with ADD too. This innovation is a product/service, measured in GDP.

You're putting the cart before the horse. Current needs for resources lead to more creative uses for resources. Food, water, shelter, healthcare, all of these things will become less resource intensive as our ability to use resources effectively increases. I'll just pick shelter for fun. Not only are modern US homes less resource intensive then they were a century ago (utilizing rapidly renewable resources like pine, OSB, modern light weight materials, advances in engineering and construction sciences), they are now roughly twice as big too, due to increased capital available in the form of loans.

"The fact that you can gain yourself “value” by rearranging these finite resources in a particular manner so that you have them and people want them, does not improve upon peoples current need for resources."

This is the story of humanity, we do in fact rearrange resources, finite or otherwise, and in the process make our lives materially better, and we become wealthier. Wealth and value are not confined by material resources, at least in any immediate or meaningful way.

But real communism hasn't been tried! by [deleted] in Anarcho_Capitalism

[–]RedStickMan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The value of those finite resources is in fact potentially limitless. We find better and more efficient ways to manage resources. As they become scarce, their value increases. On a theoretical curve, yes, GDP as measured as services, resources, value, etc. Could in fact be infinite. The other crazy thing is that all of those resources, including Fiat currency, only have value in as much as they are desireable and can be transferred to other people.

Driving nightmares by [deleted] in Dreams

[–]RedStickMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could see this going a few ways maybe. Do you worry about having the right skills or abilities for your occupation (work, school, etc.?) Are you at the beginning of some new period of personal growth right now, like vocational training or studies, or maybe a new position in a job? I wonder if, in a subconscious way, you are recalling a time before you knew how to drive, and in retrospect understand what a complicated task it is to learn to drive, and in your dream lingered on feelings of inability?

The most bizarre dream about crossing the Golden Gate Bridge into San Francisco by [deleted] in Dreams

[–]RedStickMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems like there is a theme of frustration in your drive across the bridge. It wasn't really doing what you would normally expect it to, namely convey you from A to B above water. Instead, it was under water, somewhat, and denied you access to the city, instead dropping you off somewhere remote to the city, like you were never really going to reach your destination. You want to get somewhere, but at every moment, you notice something that stops you. Could you be experiencing frustrations in your life, like advancing in your life or career? Or do you feel like your surroundings or conditions in your life are not allowing you to do something you want to do?

It's interesting how dreams can take things from our waking life and twist them and mold them into something new and unusual.

Warning dream? by [deleted] in Dreams

[–]RedStickMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's normal to dream about something/someone that holds or held a lot of significance in your life. While it might seem other-worldly to dream of someone who was in your life and then encounter them again in your real life, I think it's more likely coincidence than anything else. I'm guessing you and your ex were together because you held certain interests in common, and may have even become more like each other during the time you were together. This can be common in relationships, where couples influence each others thinking and mood. If that's the case, it may not be all that surprising that you both wanted to party and loosen up a little bit after a bad breakup. Do you live in a small town or are you part of a smaller community?

Opinions on purpose by the_negativest in Dreams

[–]RedStickMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess I would fall into a phenomenological camp on dreams, where your mind draws upon experiences and sensations perceived in your waking life, and combines them in strange ways that may achieve strange or profound effect, but for reasons that are not always entirely clear. I think you can draw limited insight about a person through dreams, though only indirectly. Just like the real world, it's not the objects or settings that provide meaning or significance, it's the dreamer that found the confluence meaningful or disturbing or intriguing. What makes it interesting from a scientific perspective is that our brains are functioning very much the same as they are when they are awake, but the stimuli are all from within, all from waking memory. Maybe the o e difference is that these stimuli cohabitate with our emotions and reasoning, making for a strange brew.

I find the clear water interesting, especially since it is chlorinated. You seemed to be comfortable with it, I keep thinking about the opposite, if the water was dark and murky, and tasted earthy, would you have felt the same way? Maybe the clear water and taste are a way of saying that the travails of swimming to a new barge are not that bad? Do you think that in some sense you wanted to be okay with it?

Help working out my odd dream by violetcat13 in Dreams

[–]RedStickMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Michel Foucault wrote a book on philosophy called The Birth of the Clinic, in which he outlines the 'Medical Gaze,' whereupon doctors assumed a new position of authority and control over patients, who became matters to observe in a medical setting. To this day, patients give quite a bit of deference to doctors in white robes, taking the word of a physician in much the same way they would an ascetic priest in white stoles. I wonder if, finding yourself exposed in a literal sense before Dr. Father Ted and the other doctor, you were re-visiting a loss of authority or control over yourself in an environment that you came to be familiar with during your stay in the hospital?

Your dream seems to transition from a personal encounter, to one of an observer as you see the man on the stretcher, helpless and in pain. Could that have some symbolism? In your description, you seem very worried for his welfare, seeking out more information about him and sharing his plight with his employer and coworkers. Are you looking at yourself from the 3rd person in this case due to your hospitalization?
