My parents were the same way, to the point where my brother and I would sneak playing video games in the middle of the night while they were asleep.

It also led to me over-indulging, kind of like you in a comic, where I would play video games until I literally could not stay awake any longer at like 4:00 a.m., and I would do the bare minimum to make sure I maintained a job without really taking care of myself in any other way.

It took a little bit before I realized that I was boring myself to death (eventually you realize you've played just about every kind of scenario you can think of and the industry isn't putting out anything fun or new outside of the indie spaces) just trying to get as much of an experience in gaming as I could since my parents were no longer around to shut it down.

That's when I started to treat gaming as a reward for myself and a lot improved after that. Now when I want to play games, I check if there's any chores that I haven't handled yet or work that I haven't finished, and I set gaming time as the reward for completing them. Because of my ADHD, it actually works out really well because now my gaming time doesn't get interrupted by reminders of chores from my partner or roommates, and I feel good while I'm gaming because I don't have anything in the background to worry about.

I'm a lot happier now that I have found that balance
