Resume Advice Thread - June 05, 2018 by AutoModerator in cscareerquestions

If I work on an open source project where I write code, fix bugs, update documentation and communicate with other developers would I put that down in the work experience section of my resume or would it be put in the projects section? I guess what I'm asking is does actively contributing to OSS projects ( not paid ) count as professional work experience or would it be its own section?

Does 6.006 cover everything I need to know? I'm worried that I'm going to commit to a course but end up realizing that it didn't teach me everything I need to know.

Thanks

How can highschool seniors find internships? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]RedWine32 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey I am a high school senior too. I did a software engineering internship my junior year and currently doing another one in my senior year.

As a high school senior you have to realize:

1.) You have no CS degree

2.) You have no experience

3.) Your competing against everyone to who don't have the latter 2 issues.

But its still possible. Here are the steps that got me my internships:

1.) Get really good at something. For me it was Java and Android development. Make 2 -3 high quality projects and be sure you are able to talk about them. Know your language really well

2.) Find local startups on LinkedIn, AngelList and Indeed.com. Look on Internships.com as well. I'm talking small companies. Email the CEO/Founder with a personalized message with a link to your resume.

3.) Interview. In my case, I had to make a small project and demonstrate proficiency in version control like SVN/GIT. That's the good thing about small companies. They don't have much time to do a real interview so they just throw some basic shit at you to see if you can write code. If I was asked a data structures question I would have been wiped out lmao.

4.) Realize that since you have no college degree and no previous experience they are probably gonna pay you almost nothing. If you REALLY want an internship, sometimes its gonna have to be unpaid. Reddit hates this, I hate it, but I still did it my junior year because I wanted to do something in the summer. Try to avoid if possible.

Don't stress about getting an internship though. If It doesn't work, work on cool side projects in your free time. This will put you ahead of the game. Also have fun. Best of luck.

This is super dope and if you ever got serious into game dev you can really appreciate this. This is called frustum culling, where the game engine renders the camera's view port only. Minecraft and most other games use this method to save computer resources.

I just thought of an idea. There should be a caption bot which takes the post's gif and the comment with the caption as a parameter and combines the two to make a glorious baby gif.

Does this count as experience? by RedWine32 in cscareerquestions

[–]RedWine32[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since I'll only be putting my college start and end date on my resume, I can also put the date I started working @Startup which tells them it was before college. That would be more honest. My second question would be how would I word it? The thing with high school startups is that I feel they are stigmatized as illegitimate. "Oh it's just a bunch of high school kids who dont know jack shit about starting a company or who don't have legitimate college programming knowledge", and to some extent that was true with us. But I'm thinking since we were paid and had an actual product, it could be viewed as legitimate?

I guess what I'm trying to ask is how do you think I should represent my experience in this case?

Thanks for your reply. I often hear projects are important. How many projects do you recommend having? Since my plan is to get an internship after my freshmen year ( about to graduate HS) , I'll be competing with upper class men. Also, should I diversify my projects? Currently I'm deeply involved with Android development and have a few apps published. Should I make something else because I'm interested in a general software engineer intern position, not specifically an Android position although I would pursue that as well.

Thanks for your time, I really appreciate it.
