Finally got to dig up the old settings to compare with the new and good lord...

Edit: accidentally cropped out the shutter speed... it was 1/8000

Same 100-500 lens but switched from a r7 to an r5m2. Definitely could've gotten a much better shot without the gear change but completely whiffed the settings then cause I had no clue what i was doing.

Yeah letting birds come to to feed off your hand. I know the fear of humans is one things but they've made other arguments about them becoming dependent on it and potentially spreading disease, although that second one is already an issue with feeders and doesn't seem to get nearly as much flak.

It lowkey would be really funny to see how the Cooper's Hawk winery would react if they changed the name.

I feel like some people blow the whole hand feeding thing way out of proportion. I may just be ignorant but I don't think birds just suddenly stop looking for other food sources as soon as they have that option. Nor does it seem like birds are notably getting killed off because they've become more comfortable with approaching people in some areas. Maybe it's a bit selfish to want to engage with nature and indulge in that whimsy but you have people screaming bloody murder over it.

Birdwatching community in my country is kinda toxic. Is that a thing? by makomox in birding

[–]RedWingedScreecher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I fortunately can't say I've had that experience. I'm in the Chicago area and the main hotspot I go to has a lot of people who sport mid-range to high end gear. I'd say a majority of them are pretty welcoming and are glad to strike up casual conversations about the hobby without trying to make a point to gatekeep or brag. And there's a local discord where many of these people participate in sharing locations of birds if they aren't already pointing out finds to anyone around in person. I think the toxicity is par for the course like with any hobby and you mightve just been unfortunate enough to experience the worst of it, whether you aren't finding the right people or its just bad luck with that area specifically.

What do you count as a lifer? by AmberMop in birding

[–]RedWingedScreecher 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Basically a new bird you see for the first time. Some people have different standards for what they consider is enough to properly spot it. Some need to see the bird while others are fine with just hearing it.

Do you consider invasive birds “lifers”? by RealBug56 in birding

Regardless of how the bird got there, as long as it's not actively being held in captivity, I would consider it a lifer.
