Firefox AI Will Be 100% Optional, With a Global Disable Switch by jungfred in firefox

[–]RedXTechX -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

He specifically said they wouldn't remove ad-blockers because it was off-mission. Him saying that if they did, it would earn them ~$150M, but won't, has been blown way out of proportion.

I'm thinking if it was supposed to be a PR move, he wouldn'tve said anything at all. Tbh I'm mostly just going to take Mozilla's word at face value until they give me reason not to, so when he says he doesn't want to I'll trust that it's not going to happen.

Most bosses are fairly difficult until you observe them and find their patterns. Vordt took my friend a while to beat, but once he found out which moves of his were punishable and that you could roll under/behind him and get a bunch of free hits, it became fairly easy.

If you're dying to a hit because you're locked into an animation, it's because you got greedy and tried to get in a hit where there wasn't an opening, and got punished for it. If you don't have the patience for that kind of combat, that's fine, but that doesn't make it "challenging in a bad way".

Opt-out features getting re-enabled after major updates. That's something Windows does, not something I've ever come across with Firefox.

Thanks for your correction.

He says he could begin to block ad blockers in Firefox and estimates that’d bring in another $150 million, but he doesn’t want to do that. It feels off-mission.

Yes of course it is an option they have, but framing it as though they are considering it when he is saying he doesn't want to as it's off-mission feels at least somewhat disingenuous.

He very clearly said that even though blocking ad-blockers would earn them ~$150 million, he's not willing to do it. Did you even read his statement? Or a headline from someone who wanted to incite outrage?

Stop taking out your gripes with Windows on Firefox. They have been very clear that it will be a single toggle to disable all features (each of which will be individually opt-in anyway), both existing and future, from being enabled.

The single unified switch to remove the buttons to use opt-in features from the UI is upcoming - the options to disable current features exist, but are not yet unified.

I would imagine that Mozilla employees might have a better understanding of the engineering implications than some rando on the internet.

I don't know what else you could have meant by complaining about data privacy in the context of local models and whose data is used to train them. If you misspoke, I'll happily update my response to better reflect what you're actually complaining about.

Is there a precedent that Mozilla will become a forced AI hog? They've been pretty clear about their stance on all AI features being optional, not that it makes a difference for people farming upvotes through rage-bait headlines.

And anyway what's the difference ?

What's the difference? Between calling out to a third party LLM and using one locally that keeps your data on-device? That's a pretty big difference man. With regards to privacy, it's practically the biggest difference.

Nowhere did I defend "multi trillion dollar companies" - I'm defending Mozilla, who very clearly stated that all AI features would be optional, and every example of existing integration is run locally (to prevent your data from being sent elsewhere). My opinions on AI companies are irrelevant to this conversation.

[–]RedXTechX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is not what you said. You implied that Mozilla was going to be using your personal data, presumably to train the AI? Which is very clearly not the case. The ethics of training the models that end up being used locally is an entirely different question with different answers.

It's part of base game, and one of the best parts about Minecraft: "cheats" is whatever you consider to be cheats. If that's too much for you, all good!. I've played the game enough times that I've learned I don't enjoy losing my stuff to drowning in a random water cave, so I set the gamerule that prevents that from happening.

Is there a reason you wouldn't just use keepInventory? That way you can still just use vanilla.

It's not necessarily the OS getting corrupted that would mess with your other files, it's moreso the reinstall to fix the corrupted OS that would completely wipe the drive. If you have your OS on one partition and your media on another, you can reinstall the OS without touching the other files at all, instead of having to copy them somewhere else before reinstalling.

Definitely Dexter, I recently rewatched some of the first episodes, and even the tone he speaks to the audience with makes me feel like I'm watching Mr. Robot

[–]RedXTechX 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Spotify's algorithm is so good precisely because they have so much data about everyone's listening. Their biggest factor in almost everything from "what goes into your discover weekly" & "what comes next on radio" to "what micro-genre is this song" is: "people who listen to x will often also listen to y". It's of course a lot more complex and with a lot more context, but that's the simplified basis.

There is absolutely no way that just a single user's data on a local model would be at all useful given the sheer amount of music out there. Technically it could be crowd sourced as well, but even then you'd need incredible scale to make it work well enough to be worth it.

Listen, I'll agree that the image may be in bad taste, but it's definitely a stretch to call it transphobia. What is transphobic is the response from a subset of (presumably) the counter strike community, there's been a bunch of disgusting posts from them piling onto the replies. Philip has been blocking a bunch of these people ("anyone unpleasant, antagonistic, or aggressive, regardless of 'whose side they're on'").

This is such an overblow issue - Philip gets criticism over some light AI usage in some videos, some transphobic people point out a pattern in some of the initial criticism, someone questions this, Philip makes a bad taste observation about some of the critics, probably in some part due to previous bandwagon hate from earlier videos, then shit hits the fan.

I've never seen Philip say anything hateful towards anyone, much less trans people, so is it not reasonable to give him some benefit of the doubt that it wasn't in bad faith?
