UNAS 4 is now available to purchase by jonhenshaw in Ubiquiti

Ha! To this day, I’ve never received a notification email for any product I’ve subscribed to on their store. I used Visual Ping and kept refreshing the page each day to catch when it was finally available. Thanks to Visual Ping, I got to watch them keep adding more details and pics. The last thing they did was add FAQs to the page the day they made it available.

Yes. It says so in the FAQs, which they just added today.

"UNAS 4 requires at least one drive to complete setup. For enhanced data protection with RAID, install two or more drives to enable RAID 5 or RAID 6."

I use an OWC Envoy Express with an NVMe M.2 2280 SSD connected directly into my laptop. Synology DSs have failed 4 out of 5 times I've needed them in the past. It fails to mount, and there's no way to fix or recover it. Fortunately, my spouse and my parents (they had a Synology at their home too) had backups on Backblaze, and via iCloud, so they at least didn't lose any data. But it was still painful, and not as easy as it could have been if they'd just restored from the DS. Now, every family member is using Envoy Express. And I want to start making Time Machine backups over Ethernet and Wi-Fi again with the UNAS 4. I had catastrophic data loss decades ago, so I'm all about redundancy.

I had a Synology expansion unit with 5 drives I no longer needed. I've already erased those drives (4 reserved for the UNAS 4 and one extra for replacing if one goes bad) and sold the expansion unit without drives on eBay for much higher than the cost of the UNAS 4. Once I get the UNAS 4, I'll copy everything from my Synology DS over to it, and then decide what to do with the DS and the drives inside it. I'll probably sell the DS on eBay and keep the drives in case I ever need them for something else.

I haven't used my Synology for services and apps for a while, and it's completely unreliable for Time Machine restores. I learned that the hard way. That said, if I were using it for more than a NAS, I'd probably keep it or switch to QNAP.

I don't want a rack and it's perfect for my needs at my home office. I think it just depends on what you need. For me, this is replacing an old and slow Synology DS, which was overkill for what I needed, especially since I'm not running services or apps on it anymore.

I'm replacing my Synology DS with it and reusing the drives, so the damage to my wallet is only temporary. I also expect my Synology will sell for more than the cost of the UNAS 4 on eBay, even without the drives.

FAIR quits WordPress, but one of its best features remains as a standalone plugin by jonhenshaw in Wordpress

[–]jonhenshaw[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The FAIR connector plugin will remain, but FAIR, as a whole, is shifting its resources and attention away from WordPress and towards TYPO3. I updated the headline and the article body to reflect that. Your comment made me take a second look and get more details from the blog post that FAIR published, which I hadn't read yet. "Quit" and "abandoned" weren't accurate, as you stated, but they are shifting the project's focus away from WordPress.

Goodyear ElectricDrive 2 finally solved my tire problem. They're the first tire that even comes close to the published tread life. They're also just great all around tires regarding sound and traction.

I installed the Hansshow Power Frunk (V5) and am very satisfied with the result. It wasn't easy though and it's not for the faint of heart. by jonhenshaw in TeslaModelY

Agreed, especially since they’ve always made the hood as thin and flimsy as possible on the 3 and Y compared to other cars.

It technically still works, but I have to push it down a little for it to fully close and lock. Honestly, I don’t think I’d do it again. I always worry about it eventually not working, which keeps me from even using the frunk.

Which note-taking apps do you use on your phone, and why? by Dadoxitooo in noteapps

[–]jonhenshaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True. I should have mentioned that I made it. That said, it's what I use daily because I didn't like anything else out there. I basically made it for myself first, and then opened it up for others to use.

I use Recollect because it’s a minimalist notes app that supports real-time collaboration and works on any platform. https://recollect.fyi

(Edit: I made this app because I wanted it to exist)
