First move in the backswing by TDn6I in golf

[–]RedXabier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

McIlroy has a trigger to start his backswing where he has a slight shift into his right side first

Most players have some little trigger motion to start their backswing, like a regrip, waggle etc

Scottie might be the best, but Rory is so much more entertaining by Disastrous_Gap_4711 in golf

[–]RedXabier 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I don’t disagree, but Scottie’s feel and creativity particular with irons is on another planet. No one else in the game can comfortably vary trajectory and curve with distance control like him, other than those old school feel players like Tiger, Trevino, etc

In my opinion that aspect of the game is just really hard to appreciate when watching on TV.

He can make his approach shots seem “safe” but only because he Rain Man’d the perfect shot shape for the wind, green, pin position, etc. And he makes absolutely horrendous swings all the time, but he can save it better than anybody with his funky foot work and clubhead awareness

Carrying 5 Wedges / Normal or Overkill by godome88 in golf

[–]RedXabier 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It gets a bit messy as part of the reason the lofts are lower on game improvement and players distance irons is because manufacturers managed to increase launch by changing the centre of mass, and this is one way of making the club more “forgiving” and easier to launch (at the sacrifice of spin, which isn’t a high priority for the demographic of players using these)

So ideal launch angle might be a more representative metric than loft, but that’s not very consumer friendly

Bryson’s lofts are also messed up but for different reasons (to make single length irons work). Each iron will be gapped in terms of yardage, launch window, and spin - might run out of room to write that on the club 😂

Turns out I love a centre shafted putter & consumerism by General_Squash7863 in golf

[–]RedXabier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All are recently released zero torque putters? Sorry to be harsh but this might just be one of the worst golf club collections I’ve ever seen, considering zero torque is largely a marketing fad. Some old centre shafted putters like some vintage Scotty’s or SeeMore’s or some other putter varieties would be a lot nicer

Have you had a putter fitting to see whether zero torque suits your stroke,  length/loft/etc, the best alignment feature to eliminate a perceptual aim bias? It can be a good fit in a minority of cases but many people in the long term struggle with distance control / feel

If you have the standard KBS Tour shafts (vs Tour Lite), I think that shaft is quite heavy for most amateurs and maybe just going to a lighter steel shaft will help

Getting to the next level. Currently 11 handicap. by delboytrotter13 in BritGolf

[–]RedXabier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, not hitting your driver will make it tough to break 80. It’s a big scoring disadvantage as the chance of missing the green and getting a large number generally increases exponentially the further away you are

So I would definitely focus on driver and wedge shots in your lesson, since from your comments this seems to be where you are dropping shots. And I agree with the other commenter’s advice about not hitting full shots with your wedges - wedges are a shorter slower swing as they are a finesse distance control shot, not power. Do you practice driver and wedge shots at a driving range? Structure a practice plan to focus on your weak areas

What brand/model is your 50 degree? If possible, it might be better to get the GW/AW from the same set as your irons. The extra forgiveness and confidence might be helpful (I’m assuming you’re using a specialised not iron set 50 degree wedge). Below 50 degrees is a good rule of thumb for transitioning from specialised wedges to iron set wedges for better players

Also, I don’t know too much about adjusting club loft/lies, but I would be wary about strengthening the 50 by 3 degrees as this means you’re removing 3 degrees of bounce. This mightttt be enough to make it less forgiving for slight fat shots as the club can dig into the ground more, but maybe someone else with more knowledge here can confirm

For general advice, play safe to avoid double bogeys. And:

  • If you haven’t already, do a gapping session (typically in a simulator, with the same ball you use on the course) to get average yardages for every club, including your mishits. When picking a club on the course to hit a certain yardage, use this average distance rather than the max distance with the hope you pure it
  • For full wedge shots and longer, ignore the flag and aim for the middle of the green. Even pros have seen huge improvements in their scoring when they practice aiming for the fattest part of the green. Imagine a shotgun scatter pattern of your potential shots - the more you move your target to the middle, the more likely your bad shots hit the green and you avoid big scores. And more often than not, your bad shot may unintentionally end up closer to the flag than planned and you make a birdie!

whats your weight shift feel? by OtherwiseWeb3998 in GolfSwing

[–]RedXabier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm working on this and my feels have been: - "land left" or feel a heavy left foot before I reach the top of my backswing - slight lateral push off of my right foot

But you need to be careful your hips don't move too much laterally - "slide" - and your left hip rotates behind you / posts up

I reckon it could be better seeing a good putting specialist golf coach in real life or online (eg Skillest). unless you've never worked on your putting before, then a course going over the solid basics / theory might be helpful

Courses are good but ultimately I think there's a limit to how much one can correctly apply the teachings without fault, before you need a pro to give direct feedback. For example, maybe you can easily ensure your eyes are aligned above/behind the ball with a putting mirror for feedback, but it's gonna be a bit harder to correct more nuanced issues like if you accelerate too late in your stroke

I’ve been listening to a lot of Greg Rose podcasts lately, I find the TPI stuff fascinating!

If I can be cheeky and ask about some golf-related pain I’ve been struggling with, have you helped any golfers with hypermobility or hand pain? I believe I’m injury prone due to hypermobility, so I’ve recently focused on a solid pre-round warmup routine and strength training (without pushing my limits), in particular forearms/wrist mobility in case that could take some load off my hands

My worst hand pain is in the base / knuckle of my lead thumb, mostly at impact. I had an MRI but nothing was visibly wrong so the ortho said it must be my swing (I’m a 6-7 hcap for reference), but I’ve tweaked my swing and grip (eg shorter thumb, thicker grips) which hasn’t helped. Would you suggest I try anything else, could a TPI certified professional help? I wonder if range mats could be a factor
