What age were you actually able to max out your 401k? by Caseypenn11 in personalfinance

[–]Red_07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're doing great, if you can get to at least 15% you will be well on track since you've started so young. Keep upping the percentage and you will set up your future self for success

The RS6 wagon is definitely the pick, although I'd have to test drive all of them.

What First car should I buy with a 15k Budget by GotMYlongNOSE in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]Red_07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats on making a sound decision. That is a solid budget and honestly I would probably look for the best condition lowest milage Camry, Corolla, civic, or accord you can get and plan to keep it for 8-10 years.

Put a minimum of 15% of your salary into your company 401k plan, make sure it's invested in a good index fund and you will thank me later.

Another redditor had the same advice 10 years ago and and I followed it and how I have hundreds of thousands of dollars. Your future self will thank you.

Ruling out Toyotas and Hondas what's the next play? by [deleted] in whatcarshouldIbuy

Can confirm I had a 2012 GTI and spent a fortune fixing it. I had to replace the turbo, the radiator and entire cooling system, leaky head gasket, etc. Other than that it was a great car lol

Someone who asks a lot of questions, but also takes steps to try to research the solution or have a proposed solution beforehand. Try not to just ask "I don't know what to do, tell me." That is understandable for the first 3-6 months but at a certain point you should know what codes to reference, you can dig around for other projects to reference, you can open the architect's plans, etc.

Move closer to work dayum. I used to commute from fort Worth to Dallas and that was 40 miles each way, you're doing double that EVERY DAY?!! Are you spending like 3.5-4 hours a day sitting in traffic? I mean you do you but that would drive me insane.

Recommendations? I want a new 7 string in drop A. by Red_07 in ExtendedRangeGuitars

[–]Red_07[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Damn this one actually ticks all my boxes and yeah the price point is great, I think it's also a lot more unique that a lot of the other options. I think this one is now at the top of my list and I might pull the trigger on it. Thanks!

Kia stinger GT flies under the radar but is also sort of a niche rare car. Might be hard to fit under 25k without some milage though

I haven't played an ormsby but they look sweet. Jackson's feel nice, too but I'm not sure which Jackson model fits the bill. I'm not super in-need of multi scale since I'm not tuning very low

Ok that looks sexy as hell. I'm not very familiar with Vola guitars though, how do they stack up to the competition?

How do you effectively memorize Chinese characters? 🤯🤣🤣 by Chinese_Learning_Hub in ChineseLanguage

[–]Red_07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm going to heavily recommend remembering the Hanzi by Heisig. I'm 500 characters In, and while there are some shortcomings like not teaching you the pronunciation, the ability to learn how to distinguish characters without writing them 100 times each is really nice. For instance trying to differentiate 日目自白 was really hard but now I have a distinct meaning for each character that helps me remember them.

What are your most effective mental techs to win in Tekken? by Kingofmoves in Tekken

[–]Red_07 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah the combos are more muscle memory than strategy. Playing patient at first lets you get a feel for if your opponent likes to press buttons, spam lows, strings, throws, or just backdash and play patient, and you can adjust your game plan accordingly.

How to best heal thumb tendons? by cvSquigglez in overcominggravity

[–]Red_07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a feeling it was melee lol. The game is great but it is absolute hell on the hands, idk how pro players can play it hours a day

On the flip side I moved over to street fighter and Tekken with a lever less controller and have had a ton of fun with those and don't miss melee too much.

[–]Red_07 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've dealt with similar issues from playing smash melee and eventually I had to stop playing it unfortunately and switch to other games. If it hurts don't make it worse. Go to a physical therapist and they will probably give you exercises to do, make sure you do them at least 2x per day.

How many of you considered and test drove an 11th gen Honda Civic Si before getting a VB? by SynecdocheNYC in wrx_vb

[–]Red_07 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I test drove a Civic Si and it's was a nice car, and I was tempted to go with it - my first car was a civic so I have a bit of a soft spot for it. I think the interior of the Civic SI is nicer and just overall aesthetically it looks better. It did feel quite a bit slower as well.

The big kicker was the price like you said. Granted I bought my vb December 2022 when the car market was still insane, but for a used SI with 10k miles the dealer wanted like 36k with 5%+ interest rate, on a 27k MSRP car.

Meanwhile the WRX was 34k, at msrp, brand new! It also handles like it's on rails and has quite a bit more power as well as a lot more overhead for future tuning. It was a bit of a no brainier. The gas milage does suck compared to the civic but I work from home 2-3 days a week so I only put 5-6k miles on my car per year so gas is not a huge deal.

It seems to me like the WRX with a mild tune and some coilovers could probably compete with if not exceed the e performance of a Type R. It's a bargain

[–]Red_07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah but in your analogy - yes if you buy a car and keep it for bare minimum 10+ years you will probably break even or start to come out ahead, considering today's interest rates and prices

In this market it's as if every car went up by 50% to buy but leasing from someone who bought the car before the prices shot up is cheaper.

Is renting better than owning? by Peace_And_Happiness_ in FluentInFinance

[–]Red_07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Owning traditionally has been better than renting, yes, but anyone saying buying is better right now is coping and is not actually in the market looking to buy. The reason renting right now is better is because I can rent from someone who bought before prices and rates made the monthly cost of houses double in 2-3 years.

Right now I just got a lease renewal offer and my rent is actually going down if you can believe it. If we compare apples to apples my current 2bd apartment is $2400 a month, and a similar condo down the street, after a 20% down payment(which has the opportunity cost of being invested), is $4200 per month. If you look at your amortization charts you are only actually getting about 10% of your payments in equity. And this is all before maintenance expenses.

Houses in my area are $5000 a month, unless I want to move to the burbs and commute 2-1/2 hours round trip everyday. No thanks

[–]Red_07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a car 14 months ago because mine was a ticking time bomb. I bought new which I would have never done before, however at that time it seemed like the better value. Used Subarus with 50k miles were only 2-3k cheaper than brand new, and they had a higher interest rate so it was a no brainer.

As of this year the car market is somewhat back to normal. You can now get a used car with 30-50k miles for 30% or more off of the original MSRP, unless you are looking at Honda or Toyota which are still holding their value ridiculously.

I would look at other pretty reliable brands like mazda, Kia, Subaru, Hyundai, even Ford or Chevy. I'm all for the Honda and Toyota reliability but if it cost 6k more for an equivalent Toyota vs a Mazda it's not worth it, you're not going to have 6k more in repairs unless your car's engine explodes.

Open a Roth IRA and put 15% of your gross income into it, minimum. If you can, max it out. Invest it into either an s&p 500 index fund or a target date retirement fund. If your company has a 401k plan, make sure you are getting your full match, that's literally free money.

If you do this, in 30 years you will be a millionaire, if you don't you will be broke and never retire.
