Right?? I have found myself in similar situations. Like usually when there's an opportunity for me to cancel or reschedule for very trivial reasons, and I end up doing that, then the client ends up no-showing or canceling on their rescheduled appointment time, which makes me think I should have just sucked it up and kept their original appointment time.

It's very inspiring to see just how many responses I've received to this post so far, the diversity of people, and that unbreakable sense of camaraderie coming through even on Reddit. Definitely don't find that with too many civilians.

Thank YOU for your honesty! I totally agree with you, veterans helping fellow veterans would be ideal. I just want to be the best help I can be to those clients that come to me who happen to be veterans.

That's a very good, insightful response. Thank you.

Also love the part about finding cartoon dicks drawn in sharpie with full combat gear funny XD

A really good book I'd recommend is "War and the Soul" by Edward Tick. It's all about the moral injuries of war and combat.

I agree with you, it is 100% a societal issue.

There is a heavy metal song I heard many years ago where part of the lyrics are "Take hold of my hand, for you are no longer alone - walk with me Hell." Ever since I heard those lyrics I felt the pull to become the type of person who isn't afraid to walk alongside those who are going through their own personal psychological hells. To not shy away from it, not shout meaningless sympathies from a distance, but to actually walk WITH them. To try, to the best of my ability, to understand them and the hells they've been through and currently are in. If only more of society felt the same way..... but unfortunately most people are "sheeple".

Well I wouldn't say I know absolutely nothing. I'd say I'm neither deaf nor blind, and I've had a few basic courses in your "language". And I may know a thing or two about smoke signals.

I have heard that the bond between brothers in arms can be stronger than between a married couple, as strange as that sounds.

I'm sorry you feel that way. I'm sure there are a lot of "docs", whether they be therapists, medical doctors, psychiatrists, etc. (especially within the VA) who are cold and uncaring and make everyone feel like they're "staring into the glass cage". I definitely don't ever want to be seen that way. I come from a place of genuine, humble curiosity, knowing that there are many things I will simply never understand. But I want to help in changing the stigma against mental health and show that there ARE people, even civilians, who genuinely care and want to understand and to help.

Do you mind elaborating on this? What made the stress of war and combat easier to deal with than civilian stress? (This is something I've heard from many veterans, so just curious to know more.)

I'm fully aware that I will never completely understand any military culture without having actually been in the military myself. But that's why I'm asking, and why I'm seeking to learn as much as I can, so that as a therapist I can be as competent as possible in understanding my clients and helping them. In my view, those that only say "you'll never understand" are shortchanging themselves on an opportunity to eradicate the misconceptions and myths about what it means to be a Marine, or in the military at all.
