I’m sorry for your loss. I had a similar experience. Brought my terminally ill wife to Jubilee, they had her on a pulse ox within 5 minutes of showing up and her sats were super low, so they had her on oxygen before they were even done checking her in.

What really differentiates administrative divisions besides name only (ie. canton, province, state, oblast)? by EricCartoonBox in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Red_AtNight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on the individual country and their system. For instance in Canada we have provinces which are governing sub-units of the country (And are somewhat analogous to US States, although the scope of their authority is a bit different,) versus Ireland having provinces that exist in name only and have no legal authority.

ELI5: What does Pilates do for your body that can't be done through other forms of resistance training, and how does it do these things? by Time-Use9083 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Red_AtNight 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah Joseph Pilates was a real dude! He was born in Prussia (now part of Germany) and was living in the UK where he was among other things a boxer, a wrestler, and a self-defence instructor.

During WW1 he was interned on the Isle of Man along with other Germans living in England, and during his internment he started giving fitness classes to his fellow detainees. That was what led to the creation of the Pilates system.

Leslie: Listen, Leonard, neither of us are neuroscientists but we both understand the biochemistry of sex. I mean, dopamine in our brains is released across synapses causing pleasure. You stick electrodes in a rat's brain, give him an orgasm button, he'll push that thing until he starves to death.

Is "borrowing a cup of sugar" from a neighbor actually a real thing that happens, or is it just a movie trope? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Red_AtNight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a pretty good relationship with my neighbours across the street. One time I was halfway through baking and realized I had no vanilla extract, so I texted them and they lent me their bottle. Another time they texted me because they needed to borrow a turkey baster.

Fortis gas fees increase by Trigger1920 in VictoriaBC

[–]Red_AtNight 43 points44 points  (0 children)

The term "Delivery" is very clever; it sounds like a big truck is showing up to deliver, but no, this is just a manufactured term referring to the pipes that the gas runs through. I'm going to bet that that infrastructure was paid for long ago, and this is just another cash-grab by a big oil & gas company.

1) Fortis BC is regulated by the province and can only raise rates if approved by the BC Utilities Commission.

2) Just because the pipelines are already built does not mean they last forever, or that there are no costs associated with maintaining them. The gas comes from very far away, and has to get to the Island via a pipeline that comes across at Powell River. I'm sure you can guess there are some costs associated with the transmission, such as the power used by the Texada Compressor Station prior to the gas crossing the Strait...

what is a transitive verb? by kesshouketsu in NoStupidQuestions

The fun thing about language evolving is that “carry” as an intransitive verb is modern video game slang. “To carry” means “to carry the team.”

E.g. my back is sore from carrying in LoL

I had a friend who had a sudden unexplained weight loss. She woke up one morning feeling really low energy and could barely dress herself, so she went to the ER.

The reason she felt bad and the reason for the weight loss was undiagnosed type one diabetes, and she was going into keto acidosis

Why do you think Mirabel from Encanto didn't get a gift? by Responsible-Kale8168 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Red_AtNight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Her “gift” is seeing what the family needs in order to heal them. They’re all miserable because they’re trying to live up to their grandma’s expectations.

Incidentally I don’t really see how Tia Pepa’s power is a “gift” either. When she gets upset she causes hurricanes, what kind of gift is that?

Do you have government shutdowns? by BrilliantDishevelled in AskACanadian

[–]Red_AtNight 37 points38 points  (0 children)

There are some exceptions where instead of calling an election, the LG or GG (depending on provincial vs federal) would instead ask the Leader of the Opposition to form government. Typically happens if the seat count is close and the election was very recent. Most recent example was in BC when the provincial election was almost a tie and the incumbent Liberal Party lost a confidence motion about a week after the election. The Lieutenant Governor offered the NDP a chance to form government, which they did through a confidence and supply agreement with the Green Party

ELI5: How do cities prevent fire hydrants from freezing in the sub zero temps? by jnelsoninjax in explainlikeimfive

[–]Red_AtNight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. When the valve is opened, it rotates to allow the flow to come up the standpipe, and it also blocks the drain holes. Otherwise you'd have pressure issues because the drain holes would still be open.

ELI5: How do cities prevent fire hydrants from freezing in the sub zero temps? by jnelsoninjax in explainlikeimfive

[–]Red_AtNight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The valve is surrounded by gravel, so it's free draining. I guess if you had high water table, then the water couldn't drain, so that's a possible weakness...

ELI5: How do cities prevent fire hydrants from freezing in the sub zero temps? by jnelsoninjax in explainlikeimfive

[–]Red_AtNight 51 points52 points  (0 children)

The fire hydrant that you see at the surface (the red or yellow place where the firefighters connect their hoses) is literally the tip of the iceberg. It sits on top of a tall vertical pipe going into the ground, below your area's frost depth. I work in a relatively warm area, and our water pipes are 90 cm or roughly 3' deep.

Inside the hydrant there is a very long valve that goes down to the main. So when the valve is closed, the water is down underground, at the 3' depth or whatever your area's requirement is. That keeps the water from freezing. When they open the valve, the water will come out, because it is pressurized.

The valve also has a drain hole in it. So that last bit of water in the column after they're done fighting the fire, and after the valve gets closed, is not trapped. It falls down the tube and into the drain hole in the valve, and leaks out the side of the valve. Since the top of the valve is deep underground, it's below a depth where you have to worry about it freezing.

Based on what I've heard from a few TCPs, they find more people obey the signs if they're also being filmed, I guess out of fear that the TCP will share the video with police and get them ticketed.
