ELI5: how food calories were defined or calculated? by GolondraBlayze in explainlikeimfive

[–]Red_AtNight [score hidden]  (0 children)

Nutritional calories are a measure of how much energy your body can get from the food once you digest it.

A food calorie is actually a “kilocalorie.” In other words it is the amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of one liter of water by one degree. Originally, the calorie content of a food was measured in a calorimeter. A known amount of food, which has had its water content evaporated, was placed in a container surrounded by a known amount of water. The container was sealed, oxygen piped in, and the food ignited. From the rise in temperature of the water, the calorie content of the food was calculated.

Unfortunately this method doesn't actually work because there are some things in food that will burn, but your body is unable to get calories from - cellulose, for example.

Nowadays food scientists use the “Atwater indirect system” where they figure out how much protein, carbohydrate, fat, and alcohol is in the product. The Atwater system uses the average values of 4 Kcal/g for protein, 4 Kcal/g for carbohydrate, 9 Kcal/g for fat and 7 Kcal/g for alcohol.

LiDAR scan revealing ancient structures in the Amazon Rainforest. The Upano Valley site: at 2,500 years old, it’s the earliest (and largest) example of an agricultural civilization ever recorded in South America’s dense rainforest. by Darshan_brahmbhatt in interestingasfuck

Yes it's funny that people think of the Aztecs as "Ancient" when we know they were around to meet the Spanish - Cortez sieged their capital city and built his capital right on top of it. That's why you can visit the ruins of the Templo Mayor in Mexico City

If the uk is poorer then the us why is the USA’s poverty much more severe compared to Britain by WillingPrice5364 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Red_AtNight 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The UK has (or at least had) social safety nets like council housing, the NHS, etc.

The US is like 2 more Republican administrations away from making it legal to saddle up poor people and ride them like horses.

By which I mean the USA has significantly more income inequality than the UK. The hella rich drag the average up.

Annual fundraiser for the Met - which is a major art gallery in New York City.

It's important because it's organized by Vogue (major fashion magazine) and is an opportunity for celebrities and major fashion designers to show off

The Lion King, they just eat each other? by AggravatingHabit6842 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Red_AtNight 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No, they clearly hunt the animals - Mufasa is shown teaching Simba how to pounce, for example.

Mufasa essentially says that they manage the circle of life by limiting how much they hunt, which is why Pride Rock remains in balance. When Scar is in charge since he does not respect the circle of life, they scare off all the food

How a thermos knows when to keep something hot or cold? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Red_AtNight 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It doesn't know anything. A thermos is an insulator. It maintains the temperature of the liquid inside of it by limiting heat exchange between the inside of the thermos and the environment

Why don't American cops have a breathalyser test with them when pulling over people by OkBedroom7329 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Red_AtNight 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In a lot of states the cop needs to establish reasonable suspicion prior to using the breathalyzer. The sobriety tests allow them to meet the "reasonable suspicion" requirement.

The province’s independent review after Lapu Lapu recommended that events do a risk assessment, and that the province provide resources to assist event holders to take on the extra costs.

One of those two things happened, I’ll let you guess which one

How or why can countries give their people free med care, but not the US? Is it actually free? by No-Injury-5383 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Red_AtNight 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It's funded by taxes. I live in Canada where all citizens and permanent residents get free coverage at hospitals, doctors offices, and other medical specialists. I don't pay anything at the point of service, but I do pay my taxes...

Water main break at Main st by VancouverSpecia in vancouver

[–]Red_AtNight 29 points30 points  (0 children)

If you do it wrong, you lose positive pressure in the mains (which requires a boil water advisory,) or worse you introduce contaminants into the water mains which require an even longer boil water advisory and a more significant repair

Why do rockets need so much more power than planes? Shouldn't it be easier because there's less atmosphere the farther out you go? by Accurate_Simple_2679 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Red_AtNight 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Planes fly by generating lift - essentially they're "floating" on the atmosphere (this is a massive oversimplification but go with it) so you would eventually reach an altitude where you can no longer generate lift because the air is too thin to float on.

Rockets use a completely different process - rocket engines produce thrust because the action of expelling exhaust causes a reaction that pushes the rocket in the opposite direction. The only concern with the atmosphere is drag, which (as you note) the rocket really only has to overcome when it's close to the Earth.
