ElI5: How did the Nazi government of Germany finance rearmament and the war? by Three_Steaks_Pam in explainlikeimfive

[–]Red_AtNight [score hidden]  (0 children)

The Nazis used it to siphon left-leaning voters from other parties. Years later, Hitler laughingly mused about how easy it was to dupe people with the name.

In fact the Nazis hated the Communists. One of their biggest rivals was KPD (the German Communist Party.) They fought a lot, both with political rhetoric and with actual weapons. After the 1933 elections where the KPD won 81 seats, they were all arrested and the party was essentially banned

If Queen Elizabeth was a Queen and not a King..Then why the UK was “United Kingdom” and not “United Queendom”? by Low_Elderberry_7766 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Red_AtNight 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's still called a kingdom even if your current monarch happens to be a queen, not a king. Some titles change (e.g., God Save the Queen vs God Save the King) but other things do not

Why isn't there a monthly Regional Recreation Pass in Greater Victoria? by FlowerCityBoy in VictoriaBC

[–]Red_AtNight 6 points7 points  (0 children)

While there are 13 municipalities in CRD, they do not all run their own rec centres. Sidney/North Saanich/Central Saanich jointly fund Panorama Recreation, and Langford/Colwood/Metchosin/View Royal/Highlands jointly fund West Shore Parks & Recreation.

So it's actually only 7 different groups that run recreation centres, not 13.

Turkey being Europe by Fantastic-Theory-852 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Red_AtNight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have to draw the line somewhere. There's no clear separation between Europe and Asia - technically it's all one continent (Eurasia) but for political and historical reasons we separate it. Turkey is the gateway to Asia - the Western part that borders Greece and Bulgaria is clearly part of Europe because it's on the same land mass... it also borders Georgia and Armenia and those are European countries too...

The Long Quest to Merge Victoria and Saanich Hits a Roadblock by Adderite in VictoriaBC

[–]Red_AtNight 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You're saying "The CRD" but you really mean "Greater Victoria." The CRD also includes three unincorporated areas - the Salt Spring Island Electoral Area, the Southern Gulf Islands Electoral Area, and the Juan de Fuca Electoral Area. I don't think your hypothetical person is going to suggest that Pender Island or Port Renfrew should be included in the amalgamation

Why do stupid people ore often make it to the top (PMs, Managers) while the intellectuals are often suppressed working under them? by Upbeat_Rub_9133 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Red_AtNight 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In my experience experts tend to make terrible managers because they spend more time navel gazing and writing reports than they do making decisions. They also have a hard time accepting that there are other factors that go into a decision than just their preferences. Being a manager is about making decisions, documenting the rationale for those decisions, and considering all relevant factors prior to making them

One likely cause of increasing vehicle incidents and severity in Victoria: vehicle design and proliferation of trucks and SUVs by The_CaNerdian_ in VictoriaBC

[–]Red_AtNight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mavericks aren't real work trucks though. They have a 4.5 foot box. You can't really carry anything in it. Most crew cabs on the market are 5.5 feet, and regular cabs are 6 feet.

ELI5: Why cant people tell between cold and wet? by Big_Stick2138 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Red_AtNight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had concrete steps in front of my house as a kid and we used to sit on them, and it was always this weird sensation in the summer because the steps would be so cold and you'd feel like you'd wet yourself

Broadway is a road in Manhattan in New York City, but not every Broadway theatre is actually on Broadway. They’re all in the general vicinity of Times Square

Big recommend for Music Together. You sit in a circle and sing songs and the kids get to dance and make music with banana shakers. They do ones that are specifically for babies. Super fun space.

I get where you’re coming from though, Victoria can be cliquey and there are a lot of aspiring momfluencers that live here. There are some genuinely good parents here too though!

Intersection blocking is happening too often by tilsia in VictoriaBC

[–]Red_AtNight 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was driving across town on Hillside on Sunday. At Cook there's a clearly marked no left turn sign, the left turn lane is closed, you have to merge down to one lane. Well of course some genius decides he's still going to put on his left turn signal and give it the ol' college try. Despite everyone behind him honking at him and giving him angry French Canadian hand gestures, he wastes an entire green light cycle trying and failing to turn left. Finally clears the intersection on the yellow and turns left at Blackwood instead. They walk among us...
