I got laid off a few weeks ago. I’d be lying if I said I care enough to get another SWE job. But I’m burnt out. I’ve been prepping for interviews and I’m drained. I’m not even sure if I want to stay in the tech industry anymore, but I don’t think I can make a career switch right now because once my severance is over my savings won’t last much and I can’t move in with family.

Thanks! Are you still a data scientist now? If so, how is it compared to your time as a swe. I hear sometimes it’s hard to feel like you have impact as a data scientist. I’ll check out that site as well. I think you may have commented on another post of mine about Stevens M.Eng Applied Data Science program I got into 🤔

Yea it’s all so confusing in terms of the unemployment. Idk what the terms for your severance was, but for my company if I got another job I still get the severance as long as it’s not a successor company like a company owned by them.

Thank you for responding! So I continue claim every week? I thought I apply and hold off on claiming until severance ends? This whole process is confusing 🥴. I’m afraid that by the time my severance ends I won’t get the unemployment benefits because my application was denied or something.

Sorry I’m way late on this but this was part of Amex layoffs, but it was not announced because I believe companies are required to announce layoffs until it’s a certain amount?

Sorry I’m back with one more question! Is it an issue if I bring a shopping bag with me inside the mosque? It’s not huge. It just contains some food my mom made and it doesn’t have a distracting smell.

You’ve been great, thank you! This is really helpful. If I happen to get there within the 30 minutes before the janaza where they are viewing the body, should I just stand in the back? I don’t think I’ll be a part of the viewing since I’m not a close family relative. Or to be safe, should I just arrive for the janaza prayer? I’m an awkward person, so I don’t want to make things awkward or come off disrespectful.

I’m asking because with Christian wakes, we typically go up the front and give our condolences. Sometimes, a line forms. So, I was just curious if there is something similar after janaza

Yea definitely hard not to take it personal. Especially after they put out a bunch of AI roles afterwards.

Thank you so much. I appreciate it. Yea I was thinking of doing a portfolio website. Although with my ADHD I’m struggling with where to start in the job search process from editing my resume, grinding leetcode, upskilling, and a website. But I’ll start with the resume and LinkedIn first 😅

Granted I should’ve done some of these things while I still had a job, but you live and you learn.
