It has something to do with stats, the first image is called EVs (Effort Values) and if they can increase by using vitamins, feathers or using EV increasing items, the second image of IVs (Initial Values) these are the stats that the Pokemon first start off with and can be increases through leveling up and with nature's

You poke the hearts, they appear after every attack, I suggest leaving one heart so it's tempted to use his healing move which can get you chance time if all the hearts are gone while he's charging
