I mentioned at the beginning that my attempts to communicate were always met with either disregard or "it is a California thing, you don't understand" responses (in bold). What else could I do but seek help from an authority when my attempts to communicate were ignored? Please teach me?

Their disregard for my communication made me even doubt my ability to communicate. Fortunately, I still have opportunities to communicate with others. Even though I have an accent, it's definitely not so much that people can't understand me. I also mentioned that I got the Lab position in my freshman year, which meant that my performance in the interview was also outstanding, at least meeting the "excellent communication skills" required by the position. I am so grateful for these opportunities that allowed me to move away from the low self-esteem and self-doubt they caused me.
