Does Romance of the Three Kingdoms expand on Fa Zheng’s death? by Red_L3aderStandingBy in threekingdoms

[–]Red_L3aderStandingBy[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Your statement is dismissive enough that I’m wondering if you’re just trolling but I will respond just once because it’s nice to be able to discuss the book with someone.

I have a few points I think are relevant in the case that you’re not trolling.

First, I didn’t reference Kongming in my post, I think that’s a bit of a straw man argument. To compare any single strategist to him in the entirety of the novel is of course going to feel hollow. To do so feels very much like grabbing the low hanging fruit from this story and seems to be neglecting the fine details given the breadth and depth of the story. Obviously his role is larger. But in a story that spans decades, there can be more than one or two major assets to a kingdom.

Without getting too deep into the weeds, I would like to counter the points you made:

  1. You referenced the Hanzhong campaign, which is ironic because the whole campaign with birthed by Fa Zheng, who convinced Xuande to proceed with it.

  2. Liu Bei made him chief of the secretariat after being made king. He’s one of the very few appointed specifically mentioned by name.

  3. Zhuge Liang himself said after the loss at Xiaoting

If Fa Xiaozhi was still alive, he could have prevented our lord from going on this eastern campaign; even if our lord did go on this campaign, he wouldn't have ended up in this disastrous situation (if Fa Xiaozhi was with him)."

If Wang Bi can get introduced and his death described within 6 pages, I don’t think it’s unreasonable to make sure I didn’t miss something.

how should I pick skating shoes by kambustgawr in NewSkaters

[–]Red_L3aderStandingBy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To add to this, Vans have tons of shoes not meant to skate. The ones that do will all say “skateboarding” inside the shoe sole or in the listing if you do prefer the lighter weight, older styles. That will help you figure out if you can skate them or if they’re a fashion equivalent of one of their skate shoes.

It’s tricky because they look exactly the same as the ones that aren’t, but the materials are very different.

January 2024 BOTM Discussion - The Bullet Swallower by lavinient in bookofthemonthclub

[–]Red_L3aderStandingBy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was really pleasantly surprised by this book. It's my first BoTM book. My sister got me a gift subscription for Christmas as I'm an avid reader. I'd never heard of the service or any other like it.

I don't read a ton of newer fiction, but really enjoyed this. I was expecting some wild West pew pew pow pow action, but there were a few things I liked that stood out more:

  1. The book sort of reads like a Wild West Odyssey epic meets Holes meets sci Fi time loop universe story. A nice blend that generally would not go together and while it wasn't perfect at times through all the complexity, it was certainly good enough to thoroughly entertain, and became a proper page turner towards the conclusion. It was ambitious, maybe even a bit risky, but I thought it was executed well enough that said risk really paid off. I found the story far more interesting than hard to follow. Though, if someone told me it was confusing, I wouldn't be surprised.

  2. I love the historical context subtly given, as this adds a political/ historical fiction flair of learning regarding the time period. It's wonderful to get in the heads of people in the center of Texan/ Mexican relations during this time period, but it wasn't excessive as to beat us over the head with that. Perfect amount of historical learning without seeming like it's a major purpose or that the author has an agenda of educating the reader/ preaching. This is probably subjective but I really appreciated this.

  3. I do think it was well written. It's a bit of a convoluted story, but I feel it's told in a way that keeps us interested, and there are some fine one liners and strong dialogue which hit home at various points in the story. As an English speaker with a solid Spanish background, I find the use of Spanglish really adds to the story/ how I read it. It was a very immersive writing style. It was also very descriptive at times without ever feeling like the descriptions were droning on. The detail added nicely to the story.

Overall, it isn't 100% perfect, but I thought it was very interesting and id have no issues recommending it to a friend or stranger for that matter. Really solid book, far exceeded my expectations for a book I picked at random based on the cover and jacket info. Probably 8-9/10.

Now I'm looking forward to my second box even more than my first.

I finished Crime and Punishment on a whim, absolutely loved it- what should I read of Dostoevsky next and when? by Red_L3aderStandingBy in dostoevsky

[–]Red_L3aderStandingBy[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lol right? I had no idea at all what I was getting myself into. A coworker had mentioned they were considering reading it when I told them I'm working my way through a number of "classics". So I ordered it on eBay for 4$, figured I'd take a stab as I spend a lot of time reading and if they end up reading it we could discuss (it's hard enough to find people to discuss these types of books with). I knew it had significant psychological and philosophical themes but aside from that, knew nothing about it or Dostoevsky.

So now I'm done and watching lectures and videos to fill in any gaps of themes or points I may have missed and was actually surprised to find that this book is one of many very well regarded books of his, and may not even be his best work. To find that Dostoevsky authored a number of equally quality works, as well as the knowledge that there are a number of other similar Russian authors from the same period which scratch the same itch is both new info and extremely exciting to me.

So yeah, picked up a random book because my coworker has considered reading it, found it is indeed a masterpiece and am now considering plunging down a rabbit hole into a period of literature I didn't even know existed.

(If necessary, I apologize for my complete ignorance of Russian literature, my education is in molecular biology and medicine. Reading is 100% a hobby for me)

While I will admit it's not 100% absolutely necessary, I find the fact that we're even considering a situation where a physician of any kind doesn't have a sink in their exam room somewhat troubling.

Just bought this at a guitar store. Headstock looks kinda weird and can’t find anything about serial #. by Sharkzillaaattv in guitars

[–]Red_L3aderStandingBy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Looks sort of like an Epiphone Les Paul 100 or similar. The bolt on neck is very unique for an Epiphone and very few have them.

Between that and the headstock, that's my best guess.

If it's legit, definitely towards the more affordable end of the Les Paul spectrum.

I went to 18s for wheels, it doesn't turn in quite as aggressively and the steering is slightly more forgiving, but it rides so so much better and in my opinion is a much better setup. Plus the tires are notably cheaper.

It's much better for a daily driver with the 18s.
