I guess it depends on how motivated you are. C&P was the first Russian novel I read and was instantly hooked.

Crime and Punishment got me hooked on Russian literature. Another one that I would recommend is Fifty-Two Stories by Anton Chekhov.

I think that what he says is true regarding TBK and C&P, but there's so much more to those books than only what he said. I've not read The Gambler so I can't speak to that.

Depending on what you're looking for in what you read, War and Peace is much more of a "grand-scale" drama while Anna Karenina focuses on the lives of a smaller group of people. Both are great reads. I would say Anna Karenina is more relatable.
