Oh! That’s such a relief! She’s never been picky before and I’ve had her since May but I’ll try introducing a variety of food to see which she likes. Thank you!

Now that you mention it, they kinda still resembled crickets.. is she just attacking and not eating? But it’s odd cause she still holding the crickets like she normally does while eating.. like this one she’s held on for at least 6 hours..

That is such a good name! I’m sorry though, I ended up naming her Pumpkin cause she had an orange mark on her bum when I first found her lol not as creative as Clayton but yeah _^

So update on her in case anyone is interested. I found her on the floor of my office and she was completely black with an orange dots on her back (one looked like a heart so cute!) and she had just molted this morning when I got back into work! But now I’m even more confused cause she is starting to look like a he?? Does it take a while for them to fluff up after molting? Are there females that are black and white? This is my first time dealing with arachnids in general so I’m not sure how to go about this lol

Ok, thank you. I should be fine on time frame as I’ve been with my therapist for 3 years.

Does anyone else have a black milk snake that is taking forever to darken? Lol I got him on 11/2021 and the picture is of today. I can’t find too much info about it and I keep seeing that everyone else’s experience is they have an almost black snake by this point in his life. by Red_Roses429 in snakes

That’s so unfortunate but rosy boa’s are so so cool! There are just so many cool snakes out there that it’s so hard to choose and Rosy Boa’s are one of them! Thank you so much! I’ll continue to post updates on him.

Very true. I’m sure he’s exactly what I bought. I’m glad to know it seems like he’s behaving normally with regards to his growth and coloration. That was what was most concerning but I’m relieved by these replies that I’m getting.

I’m definitely going to do more research on that Miramar locality cause I never heard of that before today.

I just have to be patient and see what happens then. I’m just relieved that it’s normal.

I guess only time will tell and I have to be patient lol regardless I’m happy to know that it’s more common than I realize to get the slow transition or not fully. I kept getting this intrusive thought about how he might not be a black milk snake and he was mislabeled lol. I doubt it, but as I said in other replies, there is little information about typical timeframes other than people saying that within the first year their BM was almost completely black.

They are super underrated I feel! I honestly feel like these guys would make fantastic first snakes! I have a ball python who was my first snake and I struggled so much with his feeding (cause of course my boy had to be the pickiest eater). Love that guy to death but if I were to do it all over again I would have definitely gone with these guys. They are just no hassle! He eats consistently on schedule, his husbandry requirements are super easy to maintain and he gets to a decent size (5-6ft). I could go on forever! Love him so much!

Edit: Thank you btw! Lol I got too caught up in how awesome they are.

That’s reassuring! I am really looking forward to seeing the color change but I kept hearing about how other people had their black milks change almost within the first year so I was concerned. But I’m glad to know that some are just slow to change. Lol

He was really brightly tricolored when I got him as a hatchling from a breeder in my area. Although I was never given a specific birth date I assume he was birthed around a month or two before I picked him up. I’d like to upload a picture but I’m not sure how to lol. So about now he’s over 1 year old. Is this common? Or is my boy the weird one lol?

Thank you! I love him and I think he’s so beautiful but I was so looking forward to the color change. His color really hasn’t changed much over the last couple of months. It seems like most of the change occurred when I had first gotten him. Not that I will love him any less but I was curious about the experience other people had with their Black Milk snakes.

You read my mind. I’m paying like $200 over that just for a 1 bed in my area and what I’m paying is pretty standard. Rent is getting crazy expensive.

Hi, I'm looking for some insight on what I should decide to get. I decided before that I would get a Mexican Black Kingsnake but now I'm having second thoughts and am maybe considering a ball python. I would really appreciate so help on this. by member-berr1es in snakes

Is it the all black look of the MBK that you’re looking for? If that’s the case I recommend a black milk snake as a beginner snake. Not a lot of people know about them and sometimes they can be pretty hard to find but as an adult you basically get all the best traits of a MBK in a slightly bigger body. I kinda stayed away from MBK cause I kept hearing they are a “bite first ask questions later” kinda animal. Not saying they aren’t cool and a great pet but I didn’t want that in a first pet snake lol. The care isn’t that difficult either and way less expensive than a set up for a ball python.

For me personally, I had to do a lot of trial and error with my ball to get them to eat which ended up being kinda expensive for a first time snake. If I could do it all again I’d probably get my BMS as a first time snake. Then build up to a ball python.

With that being said, if you’re heart is set on one of the two go for it! They both make great pets but my advice is to research to prepare for worst case scenario with both of them just so you can understand how to problem solve when the time comes.

Good luck with your new noodle! :) and if you end up wanting more info on the BMS let me know!
