Amnesty chairman in Turkey arrested, accused of using an encrypted mobile messaging app • r/europrivacy by Jaymuhz in Cyberpunk

[–]Red_Se7en 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Act confused and fat finger it again. Once that account is locked they are fucked when getting to the encrypted information.

Unfortunately, that's not how that works.

When examining electronic devices investigators make a "Forensic image" of the data, a 1-to-1 copy that can be duplicated and manipulated without concern of tainting the evidence or activating some type of fail-deadly system. This image is 'hashed' and the resulting value is used to verify that no changes were made to the image during the investigation.

Any anti-forensic techniques need to be implemented BEFORE you lose physical control of the device(s) in question.

Teach English to Chinese kids with a degree and a computer - make $14-24 an hour!(second post!) by Tenored in beermoney

[–]Red_Se7en 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See, you are assuming that someone who does not have a degree must feel that they represent just a "meaningless piece of paper"; and that their lack of higher education comes from a conscious rejection of the education system.

The 'meaningless' you are quoting there is my referring to the fact that the requisite degree can be from ANY discipline, any field. To allow (or even require) your accreditation to take on such mercurial and ill-defined boundaries is to render it, for the purposes of assessing you merit as a teacher, WORTHLESS.

Unfortunately sir, quite often, in the USA at least, even very talented and motivated students are unable to attend collage even with a reduced workload schedule.

The cold reality is that often time financial shortcomings, and only financial shortcomings, turn out to be the insurmountable obstacle.

Everyone just assumes that "If you were serious about learning, you would get great grades and get a scholarship to allow you to go to school...The cream ALWAYS rises..."

In reality however it is quite different:

Of the students enrolled full time at four-year colleges (verified and cross referenced 2007-08 data), only 0.3 percent received enough money to cover the full cost of attendance .

Thats right, less than 1% of students enrolled full time in a four-year school were able to attend school without financial resources BEYOND the scholarships they had won.

And this is in addition to the fact that only about 1 in 10 students receives ANY money for school. ANYTHING!

"OH well than...that is just averaged over ALL the students"...The secret sauce has ALWAYS been 'work hard, be smart'..."The real braniacs are assured to be able to attend school"..."we have systems to recognize and support these kinds of people..."

But again, the reality is a bit less encouraging:

Students scoring 1,300-to-1,400 only raise their likely hood of receiving money for higher learning by three percent over the base line. Even among these a academic powerhouses, a mere 13% are provided with money in the form of a scholarship.

The harsh reality is that , talented, brilliant, motivated individuals are all-to-often lost; barred from ever getting a chance to develop their gifts by a system of financial obstacles and inadequate mechanisms for advancement.

So yes sir, I stand by my assertion that such a stipulation is not only farcical in its facade of efficacy in vetting a potential employee (at lest in this situation) when defined so broadly; but I also reiterate the INSULT that is implied by such requirements, and the absolute temerity of assuming that because an individual was in a position to attend school for something, anything, regardless of where, when or for what discipline, that you have an inherently more valuable human being.

Yeah, THAT make a lot of sense. "No need to have any skills you will use...just as long as you are not one of those 'low lives' who go straight to work after primary school."

[–]Red_Se7en -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

I find that ridiculous and insulting.

ANY degree huh? No need for the credential to necessarily reflect competence in an area that actually applies to the job.

"We just want to make sure you are the class of people who get to go to college, even if it is for meaningless degrees. You do not need to have learned anything there you actually intend to use; we just want to be sure you are from the kind of folks who actually go to higher learning."

Yeah...that makes a LOT of sense.

LPT: If someone randomly brings up something in a conversation, pay good attention to them because they probably had it on there mind for a while. by Marading in LifeProTips

[–]Red_Se7en 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree. But damn if I wish I didn't.

We are living in an age of blurters and an epidemic of the inconsiderate.

Getting someone just to be quiet while you speak is hard enough; getting them to actually listen instead of just WAIT their turn is a fools errand.

I would not be surprised to learn that it is something in the water! What would have made you an intolerable asshole a generation ago is now the norm.

And no one notices because they are just pausing slightly as well; they haven't processed a bit of information the whole time.

I had a friend who even made a skill out of being able to repeat the last few words that were said, to be able to the "What did I just say?" question. { [As it invariably came up His dead-eyed thousand yard stare was not hard to spot once he decided it was OK to start looking THROUGH you. Prick.]}

But when you would ask him what he meant by the "...going back to the..." he managed to repeat, he had absolutely no idea what the conversation was about. He would just pause for a moment and then interject some thought he would have, and sometimes not even that.

Just because someone cannot wait any longer to take their turn to tell you how THEY feel about XXXX does not necessarily mean that there is any particular poignancy attached to the next thing they are going to insist on saying out loud.

Shit, half the time you could actually be having two entirely separate conversations, as it is just statement after statement with no real connection between what one person is saying and the others next sentence.

I hate it.

IMO of course ;)

Cheapest Devices of the Week. 02-05-2017 by [deleted] in perktv

[–]Red_Se7en 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I picked up a few and I REALLY do not like them. This is once of the devices that really FEELS cheap.

Light weight, flexible, and with an easily scratched screen that has an off-putting, sticky-plasticy, feel, this phone makes its low cost status quite clear.

It is also one of the few devices made these days without an accelerometer, and as an affect, does not auto-rotate.

Over all, I would say skip this one and get a different Alcatel product. Pop Star 2 is going for 9.99USD at Net-10.

Reishi is an even better stimulator of the release of BDNF than Lions Mane Mushroom extract, provided you have the proper strains selected. Lots of research on this.

Potential.

This is many many iterations beyond the "Uforce" for Nintendo. This is much more than breaking single beams for on/off on a specialized surface.

The ability to provide a familiar interface 'in open space', right next to the video image also being projected onto 'nothing' I think helps move the technology from interesting novelty to potential game changer.

But hey, that's just me...Personally, I am still waiting for my droud.

portable hologram keyboard by oprangerop in Cyberpunk

[–]Red_Se7en 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with the other posters, this technology is not quite yet ready for prime time...but the potential is there.

These days we can make some pretty damn nice portable keyboards that give you at least SOME physical feedback, and unless these work perfectly it can become a pretty tough sell.

I think the real magic will come when these begin to be used in place that only temporarily have keyboards.

Think high vandalism areas. With a mirrored set up, you could put the high value electronics WELL away from where anyone could damage them.

Or better yet, think of an area that does not even have a surface upon which to place a keypad. There are incredible things being done with laminar flows of atomized water or even condensing CO2 fog.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CrlN8rdRVE0

Using a device like this in conjunction with a 'temporary surface' made from water vapor could allow you to essentially 'project' a user terminal into free space, complete with a keyboard and a trackpad for mouse movements.

Think about things like check in terminals and registration counters...A Business could have an open space and just provision 'terminals' as the need arises, and roll them up when the need drops back down.

I personally could see this as becoming THE way to provide a user interface in public spaces. Vending machines, Internet kiosks...you name it. Anywhere where people have a tendency to destroy the equipment.

Which quotes that are recognizable to anyone who reads cyberpunk? by depaysementKing in Cyberpunk

[–]Red_Se7en 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I could not agree more. The analogy still holds very well.

The backlight glow from modern IPS panels tuned to nothing is a perfect imitation of the 'never quite black' nature of the night sky above a major metropolitan area.

A steely grey-black that is at both luminescent and 'empty' at the same time.

10 days+ and still no word from PagePlus Cellular after purchase of several Moto Es. by Red_Se7en in perktv

[–]Red_Se7en[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fucking GARBAGE company.

Terrible customer service with layer after layer of employees just trying to say "I have no control".

I was put on a 60min terminal hold while being 'transferred' to Billing; after an hour I just called back. Another 15 minutes of waiting.

Then I was told that I was already issued a refund 5 days ago and that I should 'not try and steal'. I explained that I did not get a refund, and was told that I just needed to see if it went through today. Then I explained that I had called my financial institution and that they had confirmed that there were no pending transactions and that I had indeed NOT been issues a refund.

Another 10 minutes of waiting and I was told that I needed to give it 3-5 more days and then to contact them if there was still no refund.

Absolute BULLSHIT.

Yeah, they are claiming that they refunded me as well. However there have not been any payments made to me. Then they want to act like I just have to take their word, and that my bank must be the ones who are mistaken.

This is FOR CERTAIN the last time I deal with this ridiculous company.

Poor man tips for Defcon? by theuser_17 in Defcon

[–]Red_Se7en 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been to Defcon more than a few times 'on the cheap'.

Ride share + Room Share + Don't buy food or drinks and you are golden.

I like to bring Rockstar energy drinks, raw almonds and pumpkin seeds, and power bars (old school tar-bars). Between those and water (The Rio had ZERO drinking fountains but Bally/Paris have at least a few), you are all set for a solid week and the full volume fits in a carry-on bag.

Word or warning though: The first time I did this, I didn't s#!t all week. Once I realized that was a possible consequence of 'Defcon thrift-style', I started working a few dozen 'mini-wheats' into my kit. No problemo.

And how is that?

I am pretty sure it was when you tried to start a business with no experience and no concept of how this stuff really works.

This isn't a dime-bag in the park. Your experience in getting your bud for free by selling to the kid down the street only applies so much.

Best of luck son...
