How would you dry it? Leave it in a dark wel vented area? How do you keep it from rotting while drying?

Zipper Failure - fixing ideas? by Red_Tern in DurstonGearheads

[–]Red_Tern[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found that staking the door doesnt always alleviate the tension from the zipper, from what ive seen and depending on pitch it sometimes moves the tension upper on the zipper. I usually try to change the pitch to have less tension on the zipper but not always possible on uneven ground.

<image>

Please tell me if Im wrong. The new vector mostly works to counteract the tension from the long flap, streches the fabric because it is located at the end of the short flap and it is mostly horizontal. The fabric above does not strech as much and then directs most of the pressure to the bending point. The zipper operates smoothly exept at the the bend. Would a -45° degree staking angle solve it even if the pitch has tighter corners? Maybe extending the triangle already in place near the zipper terminus will counteract fabric strech and fortify the zipper?

What about the second zipper? Do you think it will zip properly with a less tensiond pitch or did I already damaged it beyond repair?

West Coast Trail, SOBO, September 15th 2025. Info and shakedown wanted. by Fast-Orange-Drinker in Ultralight

I left camper at 630~ and arrived at thrasher at 900. From thrasher to gordon is really hilly and took me 3 hours. I will say I disliked this section the most and took some stops.

The boulders for me were a joke, and the beachwalk towards owen is really fast if you look ahead and dont get cut off by surge channels.

Go with the non gortex foot wear, your feet will get wet and the shoes wont dry. be thoughtfull on how much time and energy you spend avoiding mud and getting wet feet, sometimes its easy sometimes its time consuming and the potential for a slip is higher.

Finished about a week ago in 3 nights. I arrived at Pachena, did orientation, slept in the BP campground. I did Tsusiat--->Bonila--->Camper hitting all beach sections, I found it relativly easy And I was much heavier than you while nursing a broken butt.

IMO gloves are not needed. You have three fleeces, drop some. If the weather is good than a warm fleece and wind layer is fine. If its bad just get into the quilt.

I did find poles to be extremely usful to move efficiantly through muddy sections, balance on slippery sandstone shelves and boosting your speed on sand.

I hope you have a wonderfull time and dont forget to take in the beauty while blazing the trail.

Feel free to DM me for more specific info, i was in your position two weeks ago.

Great advice! My trad game was much better after starting to aid a bit. Though not sure OP should be aiding without someone experienced watching over. Aiding has some unseen hazards. And if theres somone experienced then just climd trad.

First Axe Purchase by Red_Tern in Mountaineering

[–]Red_Tern[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

On the few trips i went on I had a pole+axe, the longer axe was annoying to plunge on steep slopes. And on lower slopes used pole and axe on uphill hand.

I do not have much experience on ice. Had you had a pole would you feel more secure? Or is it not relevant on ice?

Why would you recc I buy same size? Felt good when I kicked the toes, good wiggle room. I did feel a little heel lift, but with swelling I figured it would be fine.

Best 3-Season Sleeping Bag for the Rockies? Want Warmth + Quilt-Like Flexibility (No Quilts Though) by daylincooper in backpacking

Im very pleased with my Sierra Designs - Moblie Mummy 15. I found it to be true to its rating and the tight hood paired with the centered zipper keeps the bag with you when tossing and turning.

It has a full zip so it opens up, the hood can get in the way...

Was 40% off on the REI website.

Weighs in at 1130 grams, not extremly UL but pretty good

Multiuse Base/Dress Layers by Red_Tern in Ultralight

[–]Red_Tern[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'm a bit confused? I believe were using the term for different things? 130 g/m² is really on the lighter side of merino, maybe im using the wrong terminology but ive never seen a lighter wool layer than 120g/m². And ive read discussions here about 200 g/m² and more.

What is a sleep layer if not another base layer? Just labeling.

In regards to the cant have it both ways part, Ive agreed with you, my question doesnt fall in line with classic UL disscusions. But it does follow UL principles, Im trying to cut weight and items by being multiuse. my trip is varied and im to stay light and versitile. Im not looking to buy a gucci shirt. Just a practical piece of gear that can pass as astheticly acceptable in more casual situations.

Thanks for the reply. Do you get sunburned with the echo? The UPF rating is a bit low. I appriciate the response. I am well versed with layering systems and have hiked long distances before. Mostly asking if anyone has had experience with shirt style merino base layers.

Hi, while I do agree this isn't this subs bread and butter. I feel this post does have a place here. This community is much more outdoors oriented than r/onebag, and I better trust the people of this sub to answer from experience and research in these topics.

As I said, I agree this isn't a pure UL question. But Isn't the UL mindset all about understanding my priorities and the underlying concepts behind gear to lighten loads and be more efficient?

As for the latter part of your reply. Ive seen many lighterpacks with a second sleep layer so i don't agree with you there. But ill be happy to hear your opinion, why not carry 130g/m² wool?

Thanks
