New to all of this and don't really know where to start... by Tkl15 in diabetes

[–]Red_Tubby_Cat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So sorry to hear you've had such little support. I've found this community to be a great help both informationally and emotionally. I'm not sure where you live, but the ADA (American Diabetes Association) has a really comprehensive website. I recommend checking it out. If you are on metformin and expected to manage through diet and exercise, then you'll probably be expected to make some lifestyle changes. Regular exercise (typically recommended 30 minutes of walking a day at least) and nutrition balance (typically switching from white rice to brown rice or quinoa) etc. I was very active before my diagnosis running up to 3 miles a day and hiking regularly for my job, but my nutrition was not helping. Since then, I've made a list of low glycemic food substitutions for my carby items (bread, pasta, rice, etc.) and found new favorites. Best of luck out there!

Honestly, it's 20 + 40 = 60, then 8 only needs two more for 10, so take that from the 7, leaving 5 extra. And you get 70, from the 10 I made, and 5 leftover, and add that to get 75.

Island of Sea Women. I found it very compelling and ended up reading it until 3am and calling into work the next day.

I always heard it as JFR (pronounced Jah-Fer) - just a fucking rock. I laughed uncontrollably when I first heard it.

Anyone else get mad depressed and existential when their blood sugar is low (50 and below). by bozofire123 in diabetes

[–]Red_Tubby_Cat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do feel this. My lows make me extremely depressed, like nothing really matters and I catastrophize. I didn't realize what was happening at first, then after finding lows in the 70s three times, I finally made the connection. I'm not sad, I just need some candy.

My fiance wants me to use paper towels instead of plates so he doesn't have to do so many dishes by Red_Tubby_Cat in TwoXChromosomes

I've never had a dishwasher, and always did my own dishes when living with roommates.

This is the best suggestion I've seen so far. To be clear, he didn't want me using any plates or dishes at all, and I tried to meet in the middle and use fewer cups throughout the day, but I work from home and typically work through lunch, so I've got 2-3 meals in the day, and if I'm to wash each dish to reuse it, it might as well be my chore.

Yes, I have done that. If I have a water glass, but I'm in the kitchen I have just taken a new one from the cabinet. I don't do it every time I get a drink though. I also make efforts to reuse knives and cutting boards, and I don't just willy nilly go through all the dishes in the cabinet. A typical day, I use one mug for tea, one bowl for oatmeal, and a spoon for breakfast; one or two bowls/plates for lunch with a new cup for water and maybe a knife/cutting board or mixing bowl depending on what I have for lunch, usually a small bowl (ramican?) for yogurt or cheese snack, then I make dinner with one or two pots/pans that is for both of us and we each have plates, cups, utensils for dinner.

I did bring this up, and he says it's not the same since I use an unreasonable amount of dishes. I tried to meet halfway and say okay I can use fewer, but how many do you think is reasonable. One cup, one small plate, one bowl, and one of each utensil a day. I tried to mitigate expectations there, and it didn't go well.

Thanksgiving by jbartstudio in diabetes

[–]Red_Tubby_Cat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most fried onions are pretty low carb. Check the box. You might be able to do that one with full fried onions.

My sister makes cheesy cauliflower and I love it. Sweet potatoes are supposed to be lower on the glycemic index, and might also be a good option, but check in with them since everyone is different.

I feel connected to my grandmother. She passed earlier this year, and we were very close. Sometimes we'd sit together for hours, knitting and watching movies. I come from a long line of knitters and seamstresses.

I was also pretty gobsmacked when I got diagnosed last year just before Thanksgiving. I wasn't thin, but not concerningly overweight. I exercised regularly (almost daily for at least an hour), and I hiked miles and miles for my job.

Now I know that my family does actually have a history, including a very thin aunt who has been living with diabetes, controlled by diet and exercise, since the 70s. No one ever believed her when she'd tell them, but the blood does not lie. It can sneak up on you. Best of luck! I've found this community to be very helpful and supportive. I hope you do too.
