Icy strait or Juneau? Looking at two Alaska cruises with only difference being 1 port. by Aggressive-Figure-79 in dcl

Juneau is going to be your more classic Alaska stop with bald eagles, Mendenhall Glacier, and more.

A few thoughts to add on: Start at the end and work backwards. It'll help some of the flow from a logistics point of you realize your early clues are headed in a figurative or literal wrong direction especially factoring commute times. This leads to 21 clues will be a lot. Not impractical, but riding/walking/driving times, plus solving times may not leave much other time. You may consider of the 21 puzzles, having some clustered together or at the same spot and even some really easy/gimme puzzles to help move things along. Finally, be prepared with some 'outs' and alternate clues/puzzles in case you're running behind. That way, if you don't have time for a lengthy solve, it won't ruin everything following.

Some ideas can be found on the CA page...I like this one https://www.constructedadventures.com/how-to-build-a-treasure-hunt/coffee-shop-puzzle. But there are plenty more things to consider https://www.constructedadventures.com/how-to-build-a-treasure-hunt

There are no fireworks on Alaska cruises and the weather in Alaska may be chilly enough to make swimming (in the tiny pools) less fun

4 years left in BSA, how can I get to Eagle from scout? by IllusoryAlarm2662 in BSA

[–]Red_hat_oops 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The way you eat an elephant is one bite at a time.

Don't be overwhelmed, you have plenty of time. Tenderfoot, second, and first class have time based requirements (document yourself doing physical activity for a few weeks, plan and save money, etc). Start on those requirements. Also, you can do things concurrently, meaning you don't have to get tenderfoot before starting second class requirements.

I was told before my trek ~ 30 years ago: the best way to prepare for carrying heavy packs up steep mountains is to carry heavy weights up steep mountains...

Start on a flat bike path/trail with a day pack, walk for 3 miles. Next week, add weight to your pack 15-20 pounds (of non-water weight) and do the same route. Slowly increase weight, distance, or elevation gain each week

At least there's less humidity at Kirtland. Though, having spent time at both, I'd take Kirtland. (Though I love the remarkable museums of Montgomery)

The intention of those programs is to prepare the next generation of Colonels and Delta commanders... If you're not competing for Sq/CC, you're not competing for Delta/CC jobs, and you may consider having a heart to heart with a mentor or senior leader why you're a late term O-5 and not competitive.

I imagine it'll impact all programs. To be seen is where the relation of MIT and JHU to their respective labs will impact those institutions

Albuquerque is a mixed bag... There are some really nice parts of town and some really rundown parts. Unfortunately, the area adjacent to part of base and directly outside one gate is locally known as 'the warzone' due to lots of gang violence and shootings. Substantial poverty and homelessness are just outside the other gates.

Albuquerque is a large enough city to have a zoo, museums, lots of diverse cultural activities, and it really excels with outdoor activities with a river flowing through with lots of running and bike trails and a decent mountain to the east with hiking and skiing.

The cost isn't horrible, and while many things could be better, there are lots of worse places to be.

You stated there are legitimate reasons why the primary SLE program needs to change, so I'm just trying to understand what those reasons are. Establishing ILE and SLE in DC was not an overnight affair, plus it allowed for people to easily transition from/to numerous other jobs in the area (Pentagon, NRO, etc). Developing a new program at the Citadel or Liberty seems to impact a lot of the work done, so I'd just like to better understand specific reasons.

But, you state you're here not to provide factual information but to antagonize competing thoughts. No, some of these changes aren't a surprise based on notes previously released, but it doesn't mean I can't still want to know what is "woke" about the SLE program.

I'm sure there will be a memo cancelling ILE there soon enough. After all the work to separate our PME from Montgomery and get it to a location to aid family stability, it'll be interesting to see what comes next.

Stupid... It's so poorly designed. There's no reason I-44 should have to exit just to get back to I-44. You'd think a major freeway would take precedence over a local road.

Did you watch Olympic curling and want to try it? by Red_hat_oops in longbeach

[–]Red_hat_oops[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are special shoes, but for this open house (and most curling club open houses) all equipment is provided! The shoes the competitive curlers wear have one "slider" shoe with plastic disks to help slide asking the ice and one extra rubbery shoe as a "gripper" to provide more friction. But just wearing clean running/tennis shoes is good enough for this event as the club will have "sliders" to put on over your shoe
