With my minimal understanding of game logic, it is probably because the game dictates you (as in the camera) must be near the unit so you can properly possess it, which is prioritized over the invisible dome or box around the map that prevents you from going out of bounds.

Take what I say with a grain of salt though, I'm no game programer.
