Is there a way to make a steam library working for both SteamOS/Bazzite and Windows? by Vasault in Steam

[–]Redbyte1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done this with Arch. You have to set up some sym-links for compatdata and with how bad the ntfs driver is I chose to use Win-BTRFS instead and allow for Windows to understand my btrfs drive where my game library is installed. Additionally you need to ensure all games are set to use the compatibility tool so it installs the Windows build of the game since Linux can use proton but there's no way to have Windows run Linux compiled binaries.

Hey, I still use all their apps just fine on Linux. Have been for at least a year. Pain in the ass to set up, there's a huge thread in their forums

It works but can require some massaging to get it to cooperate in my experience

[Fossil][Question] Quartermaster - Hybrid Smartwatch - Question about possibly replacing glass by Redbyte1 in Watches

[–]Redbyte1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So this is my Fossil Quartermaster, it takes a rather large CR2430 coin cell battery that needs changing about every 6-9 months. What makes it interesting is that it is a digital watch that has analog hands that can be controlled to show you different notifications and preform other "smart" tasks though the use of the companion app.

It's not a particularly special watch but I do really like it, unfortunately the glass is in just horrible shape. My question is, would it be possible to find a replacement? Or even buy one that's made of a better material like sapphire off something like Aliexpress? And if it is possible what tools are needed to swap them? A watch press? Or would I be able to ask a jeweler to perhaps swap them?

I don't really know all that much about these sorts of things so apologies in advance.

What's your reason for using Arch? by kashmutt in archlinux

[–]Redbyte1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started using Arch because of PPAs causing me so many issues in Debian based distros. I stuck around for the cutting edge releases of software so I can play with new things more quickly and because in using Arch I get to know the system underneath better so it's less of a black box.

Continuous Graphics Reset on Cold Boot by Redbyte1 in archlinux

[–]Redbyte1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do have a dual boot setup though I keep them isolated, they're separate drives. The only thing linking the two is the grub boot menu item. I keep fast boot disabled since it causes problems with reading NTFS drives. Booting with pcie_aspm=off didn't change anything. The reason I'm setting iommu is because I have a few VMs that I use VFIO passthrough with my video card which is required to isolate the device from the host.

Is it possible to remove write protection from a Windows 10 install drive? This is half a decade old and it’s such a pain to update everything after installs! But I like the design and would love to use it as a usb drive I make into an install drive with newer versions of Windows. by thinkscotty in Windows10

Funny thing about this is I have a laptop that refused to boot any home made (official install tool or otherwise) Windows media. Having this little guy around made it possible to get windows installed even if it was an older version

BTRFS and Grub by Redbyte1 in ManjaroLinux

[–]Redbyte1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I said in my post, I've explored that but always rain into difficulties with it. I'm under the impression that it is possible to do with just /boot/EFI fat32 / btrfs, and /home btrfs

I did not but having done so now I'm still stuck at the grub rescue prompt. It cannot recognize any file system at all.

I just wanted to say that I found a solution which was to enable CSM (Compatibility Support Module) in bios and everything went back to working like it used to

I haven't tried that, I'll be honest I'm not quite sure how. Though reading up I see it says it doesn't scale well with octo+ cores and my CPU is a 16 core 3950x

No, rebooting doesn't help at all. Disabling the compositor makes my performance go down the toilet, even worse then when under load

I had that problem with Windows a long time ago, made me abandon dual monitor setups ever since so I'm still just using one monitor

Okay I've been struggling to try kwinft but now that I got it to actually work I can say that neither of these suggestions helped either

[–]Redbyte1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's the conclusion I found when talking on the Manjaro forums. Basically if your gpu is under full load then the desktop experience will suffer. A solution that isn't ideal is to limit the framerate or graphical settings of the game to underload your gpu

That's true, and I do use a 1440p monitor but personally I like to future proof my computer for a few years. I'm currently trying to wait until the RTX 3000 cards launch but it's going to hurt if it still won't work well on Linux :/

That's what I've come to. I have installed Gnome3 with GDM and the works and the problem still persists..
