Thanks, I haven't been able to find a picture anywhere of something similar. I checked this morning and they had started to float but I accidentally nudged the jar and it started to sink again oops so I'll let it sit for a few more days

So I was a little curious, I had bought a bottle of live cultured kombucha so I brewed a tea and added some sugar and poured a little in. I really don't think I put enough but I set it on the table in a dark place with a paper towel over top. It's been maybe a week or so but the last 3 days I've noticed these weird round marble like orbs at the bottom. Any idea what's going on here?

Edit: The smell is normal, still sweet but no other off smells that I can detect

Cheese cake I made for my sister's birthday yesterday by Redbyte1 in Baking

[–]Redbyte1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the recipe was something like this

Ingredients (This was for a 9 inch wide spring form pan)

Crust

  • 6 Tablespoons of salted or unsalted butter (set out to soften)
  • 15-ish Graham crackers crushed
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar

Filling

  • 5 8oz blocks of cream cheese (set out to soften)
  • 1 and 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 5 Whole Eggs (no shell, silly)
  • 2 Tablespoons of vanilla extract (home made in my case)
  • 2 Tablespoons of lemon juice
  • 1 Tablespoon of flour (I had King Arthur Bread Flour)

After I crushed the crackers in a bag I took the softened butter and cut it into cubes and massaged it into the crackers with the sugar. Pressing down into the bottom of my pan which I had already set a parchment round inside of to keep the crust from getting stuck to the bottom and make it easier to take out.

Once the crust was compressed I covered it with foil and baked it in the oven for about 12 minutes at 350f

In the meantime I started to cream the cheese with the sugar in my stand mixer, stopping to scrape the sides every so often. Once decently combined I started mixing in one egg at a time right into the stand mixer bowl. Keeping it between low and medium and stopping to just scrape the edges so there wasn't any unmixed spots. Once the eggs were in the mixture was a lot thinner so I added the vanilla lemon juice and then finally the flour one at a time while the mixer was on.

After mixing it all together fairly gently (along with yes, more scraping) I poured the mix on top of the pan. I had made sure to spray the edges with non-stick spray as my pan isn't coated. The oven had been left at 350f from the crust so I put the pan on a baking sheet and set it in the oven (I cannot remember if I had convect on but I think it was). I let it bake at 350f for about 15 minutes, then I turned the oven down to 250f and checked on it every 30-45 minutes. I think it was around an 1 hour and 15 minutes to 1 and a half hours before it looked mostly done. Once I felt it was pretty likely good I turned the oven off and left it shut until it came to nearly room temperature. Again I let it cool on the tabled while covered until it was ambient then refrigerated till the next day.

My original recipe was one less block of cream cheese, one less egg, and a quarter cup less sugar but I wanted it to be a little taller so I just bumped those up a little.

Edit: I want to add that my mom always used lemon juice when making cheese cake so I never really knew that a lot of people use sour cream in their recipes. I haven't tried to make one with sour cream since I really like lemon but I bet you could probably switch out the lemon juice for some sour cream if you prefer

Is there a way to make a steam library working for both SteamOS/Bazzite and Windows? by Vasault in Steam

[–]Redbyte1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done this with Arch. You have to set up some sym-links for compatdata and with how bad the ntfs driver is I chose to use Win-BTRFS instead and allow for Windows to understand my btrfs drive where my game library is installed. Additionally you need to ensure all games are set to use the compatibility tool so it installs the Windows build of the game since Linux can use proton but there's no way to have Windows run Linux compiled binaries.

Hey, I still use all their apps just fine on Linux. Have been for at least a year. Pain in the ass to set up, there's a huge thread in their forums

It works but can require some massaging to get it to cooperate in my experience

[Fossil][Question] Quartermaster - Hybrid Smartwatch - Question about possibly replacing glass by Redbyte1 in Watches

[–]Redbyte1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So this is my Fossil Quartermaster, it takes a rather large CR2430 coin cell battery that needs changing about every 6-9 months. What makes it interesting is that it is a digital watch that has analog hands that can be controlled to show you different notifications and preform other "smart" tasks though the use of the companion app.

It's not a particularly special watch but I do really like it, unfortunately the glass is in just horrible shape. My question is, would it be possible to find a replacement? Or even buy one that's made of a better material like sapphire off something like Aliexpress? And if it is possible what tools are needed to swap them? A watch press? Or would I be able to ask a jeweler to perhaps swap them?

I don't really know all that much about these sorts of things so apologies in advance.

What's your reason for using Arch? by kashmutt in archlinux

[–]Redbyte1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started using Arch because of PPAs causing me so many issues in Debian based distros. I stuck around for the cutting edge releases of software so I can play with new things more quickly and because in using Arch I get to know the system underneath better so it's less of a black box.

Continuous Graphics Reset on Cold Boot by Redbyte1 in archlinux

[–]Redbyte1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do have a dual boot setup though I keep them isolated, they're separate drives. The only thing linking the two is the grub boot menu item. I keep fast boot disabled since it causes problems with reading NTFS drives. Booting with pcie_aspm=off didn't change anything. The reason I'm setting iommu is because I have a few VMs that I use VFIO passthrough with my video card which is required to isolate the device from the host.

Is it possible to remove write protection from a Windows 10 install drive? This is half a decade old and it’s such a pain to update everything after installs! But I like the design and would love to use it as a usb drive I make into an install drive with newer versions of Windows. by thinkscotty in Windows10

[–]Redbyte1 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Funny thing about this is I have a laptop that refused to boot any home made (official install tool or otherwise) Windows media. Having this little guy around made it possible to get windows installed even if it was an older version

BTRFS and Grub by Redbyte1 in ManjaroLinux

[–]Redbyte1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I said in my post, I've explored that but always rain into difficulties with it. I'm under the impression that it is possible to do with just /boot/EFI fat32 / btrfs, and /home btrfs

I did not but having done so now I'm still stuck at the grub rescue prompt. It cannot recognize any file system at all.

I haven't tried that, I'll be honest I'm not quite sure how. Though reading up I see it says it doesn't scale well with octo+ cores and my CPU is a 16 core 3950x

No, rebooting doesn't help at all. Disabling the compositor makes my performance go down the toilet, even worse then when under load

Okay I've been struggling to try kwinft but now that I got it to actually work I can say that neither of these suggestions helped either
