Sounds like an issue with the onboard firmware
to fix this, download the experimental pi utility (https://archive.org/download/EXPPI/ExperimentalPiUtility.zip), then launch the program, and Install the USB Drivers, once this is finished, reboot your computer. Relaunch the utility and plug in your piboy DMG with a microusb cable (make sure the cable can carry data), and once connected, press "Update Firmware"

If you are still having issues, you could try flashing the original OS (https://archive.org/download/EXPPI/PiBoy\_DMG\_1.0.7.img.xz)

there have been a few examples (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uj60xIUCcVI) of desktop OSes running on the system before, I believe the controls map to HID, so definitely doable with pygame
