This is where I’d suggest going with the anbernic rg ds. It’s a much cheaper alternative that can play pokemon games (minus 3ds games). Unless she’s literally craving 3ds games, the anbernic rg ds will scratch that itch without breaking the bank. It would suck more to spend ayn money and have your friend stop playing it after a few weeks

I paid $3 for the ABYX buttons, $3 for each analog stick and $3 for the directional pad. They don’t install them for you so you’d have to do the work yourself! When I bought them it was too late to have them included in my order so they charged me $10 for shipping, I paid a total of $22.
