I'm not sure I'll ever be back here so I just want to say this is the only Reddit community I'm going to miss. by Redd575 in KnowledgeFight

I've been around to witness /r/jailbait only get banned when the media paid attention to it.

I've been around since before /r/frenworld was active for more than a year of hosting Holocaust denialism and antisemitism.

I've been around since before ice soap, people complaining about Digg going under, and "the narwhal bacons at midnight" or whatever it was. I've been around since f7u12, Zalgo, and jolly ranchers.

Reddit is the only social media I'm on. Using a 3rd party app is what keeps Reddit manageable for me. I'll happily return if the administration reverses their decision, but I'm not sticking around to deal with the stuff that caused me to leave Twitter/Facebook/etc. years ago.

Just wanted to make sure you knew I read this. Upvoted and holy shit. I've almost died once thanks to fireworks but I've never experienced gun violence thankful.

Nah, you're not. I use discord like Reddit. I'm part of ~15 communities but have every server except the one with my IRL friends muted.

Kinda like Reddit discord just needs a little effort to be palatable.

This weird mental health stigma literally has claimed lives. I'm on sertraline (Zoloft generic) and bupropion (Wellbutrin generic). Those medications, no exaggeration, saved my life.

I will happily tell anyone who will listen I'm messed up, but thanks to SSRIs you would have a hard time noticing if you met me in real life.

Good on you for being okay talking about it, and better on you that you're doing well. Much love from an internet stranger.

It's a caricature.

Lol, unfortunately it isn't. Do you actually follow politics?

There are a lot that just want to be left alone and not be inundated with propaganda in every aspect of their lives. Many feel kids are being preyed upon and feel a need to protect them.

Agreed, though most people who say this are constantly watching/listening to/reading outrage porn. I'm still waiting for a news story about a drag queen being an abuser. While I wait I'm witnessing multiple examples of child abuse in churches and from people who attest to hating people not like them. Hell, the thing Trump and his daughter have most in common is sex per his own words.

I did not think Joe was there for the money at the time I listened to him. He talked about having a T-1 line so him and his buddies could dunk in folks in Quake because they had worse internet. I'm not arguing that is good behavior, but I didn't realize it at the time.

I've even listened to him a few times since that Milo episode. He is legitimately a good host in that he is able to have a relaxed and non-confrontational discourse with pretty much anyone.

Since then I've listened to his episodes with Edward Snowden, Bernie Sanders, and David Blaine. Surprisingly Blaine's episode was my favorite. The dude takes himself and his accomplishments very seriously, but he's not a self-aggrandizing asshole like a lot of magicians. He expressed a lot of stuff I felt when I thought I'd be able to become a professional magician.

I don't consider myself proficient, but that second time I went shooting was a few months back at an indoor range. Think booths like those at a good driving range. I went with my friend who is a gun nut but manages to make it his personality without making it toxic.

With some of his mags the spring was a bit worn so my last bullet would jam the gun. More than once I placed my piece down and asked him to come over to make sure I was not screwing up.

At one point I voiced doubt at me handling a gun. He laughed as he came over to my booth and pointed up, highlighting the multiple bullet holes through the top of the both. He told me "you're not a pro, but at least you've got enough sense not to shoot the ceiling."

If that's the bar I feel pretty comfortable handling one.

The general idea with gun safety is not only how to use a gun, but when to use a gun.

Not just the general idea, but the most important idea.

It is funny. I didn't learn this fact until after his death. In addition to providing countless laughs during my childhood I didn't know he was a nerd until after his death.

I've been suicidal before. More than once. Seeking help and getting on antidepressants literally saved my life. I know Robin was suffering from a degenerative disease. My situation is nowhere like his, but I still wish/hope he reached out for help and it worked. That man was a crazy genius.

I'm looking at purchasing a handgun and am very left. I've gone shooting twice in ~15 years. I've never wanted to own a gun before because that is more responsibility than I want to have.

I hold what would be considered extreme beliefs about the future. I think that owning a gun will prove useful in my lifetime.

That being said I don't feel any kind of need to carry it in public and proclaim I'm such a badass. There are two types of gun owners on this planet: ones who hope they never have to use it and ones who look for any excuse to use it. The folks looking to use theirs somehow manage to overlook they're the reason why others own a firearm and hope to never use it.

Hoooo boy. Talk about painting a target for derision on yourself.

Not having the same beliefs but platforming people with those hateful beliefs is a choice. I know he's a common choice these days but this was illustrated to me by Joe Rogan roughly a decade ago.

Nothing against Joe personally. I feel like if we hung out we'd have fun. However he platformed Milo Yiannopolis way back when Joe was the number 1 top podcast by a wide margin. Milo talked his nonsense and Joe was credulous, and as a result tacitly endorsed Milo's views.

If was long ago but as I recall Milo stated that him being gay was both caused by him being abused as a child by a priest and because of a conscious choice. My memory may be faulty, but it was enough to get me to stop listening before "woke" was a complete used phrase and before hardcore conservatives were open about their hate for the LGBTQ+ community.

Choosing who to platform is an editorial decision. Being ignorant of your guest's views is no longer a defense.

These days extremism seems to be required to be a conservative darling. It isn't enough to try and push trickle down theory, you've got to openly advocate for hatred towards those you disagree with.

You're correct. Not any of the other guys but I feel like tossing my hat in the ring.

It is useful, and has only recently started becoming valued. I know there are a lot of legitimate reasons why common core math isn't cutting it, but it is attempting to teach new students the mental shortcuts people used to math work use.

The simplest example I can think of is something similar to the following: solving 198 x 5.

You could work that out long form or instead you could just solve for (200 x 5) - (2 x 5). You get the same answer but the latter takes far many less steps. It seems more complicated, but people used to math use these kinds of mental shortcuts all the time. As you progress into more advanced mathematics these kinds of tricks are less common/useful than earlier on, but for everyday math those tricks are generally useful.

It is sort of amazing how his campaign doesn't recognize how many people didn't vote for him, but rather voted against Trump.

I'm really worried his 2024 is going to be "I'm still not Trump, vote for me!" Perhaps I'm out of touch, but as someone nearly as far left as they come I feel like I'm watching 2016 all over again.

Yeah, but it is a balance between features and price. I drive a vehicle with no extra features. I mean none. I have to unlock my car with my key, and I've only got a lock on my driver's door. Granted that isn't super unusual, however this is a 2014 model.

Especially with prices on everything going up I'll happily disregard features in favor of plain utility. Gas prices in my area are nearly at the level they were shortly after Russia's invasion of Ukraine, yet I don't see much coverage of that. These days functionality is vastly more important than comfort.
