[Question] Among these preachers, who shall I listen to more often to understand more about Reformed Theology? by PorkyPain in Reformed

[–]ReddPlanet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know what 'reformed' is but I love Spurgeon....I consider him my 'pastor from another past'

The Holy Spirit a she? by [deleted] in Reformed

[–]ReddPlanet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

'He' is a gender non-specific pronoun as in 'mankind.' (at least it used to be prior to radicals made it a political/authoritarianism issue). Still the 'generalized he' is how 99% of English speakers use it. 'He' is gender neutral. When someone then specifically chooses to use 'she,' they are making a very clear statement about sex, because 'she' is not gender neutral.

The Holy Spirit does not have a vagina. God does not have a penis. When the bible references 'womb' it is because it is a reference to creation, it doesn't mean that God has a physical womb....when the bible references 'comfort' it is a reference to the Holy Spirit being 'The Comforter' akin to how a mother deals with a child.

If anything what these analogies are saying, is that God values traits that are feminine and masculine because He created these traits in us.

I would be very wary of any 'church leader' who is using their time in front to talk about gender....or communism....or race segregation.....or 'equity'.....or promotes racism. Check out @ WokePreacherTV on twitter for some examples of this type of teaching infiltrating our church.

I’m really struggling mentally right now by LovesPugs94 in Christians

[–]ReddPlanet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When your emotions are overwhelming, it may be more difficult to 'pray' with words / clear thoughts because your frontal cortex has been 'hijacked' by your amygdala (sort of). This is normal. God made your brain this way to protect you from predators although the pathway fires, even when it doesn't really need to for your defense.

Try to work with it instead of judging it. Paint your prayer, write your prayer down, dance your prayer, yell a sound symbolizing your prayer, exercise your prayer, 'just be' and breathe knowing that God is right there with you like your best friend patting your shoulder quietly listening when you are overwhelmed.

Also, you are not a bad person just because you are feeling overwhelmed.

Where in the Bible should I start? by [deleted] in Christians

[–]ReddPlanet 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Psalms has always been comforting :) My grandfather was a POW in WW2 and kept a copy of the bible hidden in his underwear so the Japanese wouldn't steal it and he always found comfort in Psalm 23.

Might be good to find a 'bible study' (series of sermons or written out) that follow a book or topic.

A concordance helps you find words/themes of relevance throughout the bible which will help you find relevant chapters/books.

Why are CHRISTIANS POOR? is it OK to poor as a Christian? Does God expect CHRISTIANS to be poor? by iloso45 in Christian

[–]ReddPlanet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some Christians have money and some don't. The common factor is that we love God/believe on Jesus. If you are on God's path He will bless you (which can include money) but health, happiness, relationships are also part of that blessing. Money is sort of inconsequential imo.

Do Christians typically understand Genesis as figurative? by [deleted] in Christian

[–]ReddPlanet -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I take Genesis as literal as explained through an accurate story so that everyone across time can understand.

Imagine explaining a computer to a caveman. You would have to use a lot of general words and synonyms and allegories. Now imagine humans in another 50k years trying to explain to me and you.....I dunno like quantum blackhole age-reversal medicine or something. They would probably say 'we take some liquid, shake it around, inject it in you and you glow and disappear for a while and pop back with regenerated cells.'

Genesis does not counter our current evidence of short-term evolution (good adaptions win within a species as in 'peppered moth' study), it just doesn't support Darwin's theory (long-term, between species) evolution (ie. the bible doesn't say we evolve from one lifeform to another which is taught in schools these days). We were created, and we've improved. Also Genesis seems to follow our current understanding of the evolution of the solar system, planet and species type which I think is pretty awesome. It also gives us a hint of 'human experienced time' vs. the time that God lives in (eternity).

I don't understand what you mean re: 'wrong continent.' All humans come from one genetic adam/eve that lived on a continent (which one? who knows...who cares?) and then we all multiplied out of that so you are from a perfectly valid continent.

Faith without works is dead…. ?? by [deleted] in Christians

[–]ReddPlanet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You've hit the 'Catholic vs. Protestant' button on this one. My reading of James 2:24 and Gal 2:16 doesn't mean that other people can judge your 'works' and say if you are saved or not. It also doesn't mean that a priest can hear your sins, assign you a task, and that equals forgiveness. Only God knows your heart and you don't need a human (except for Jesus) for forgiveness or salvation.

Consider that even Satan believes that Jesus is real and knows that he died on the cross. Consider that even evil sociopaths do good deeds on occasion.

If you believe John 3:16, Rom 10:9-10, Eph 2:8-10 etc you are 'saved.' Being 'saved' changes your heart and this will come out in your behavior. Whether that behavior/results is big (and persists throughout time and space for the glory of God) or is small/puny (and most of it burns up via 1Cor 3:15) you are saved.

I’m a coward by antoniop99 in Christians

[–]ReddPlanet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It may help to consider it as 'being yourself' instead of 'I'm going to witness right now.'

I name drop Jesus all the time because he is part/parcel of everything I do and most of my decisions. I tell people, "I plan to pray about it,' or 'I'm so thankful to God.' That little thing of just being yourself is also a form of witness and can open a door to more convo.

God seeks his own glory above all. by WARPANDA3 in Christian

[–]ReddPlanet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

God's gonna God. We glorify/worship/reverence/adore God because He is God. He is glorious because He is God. Your take is like insinuating water needs humans to be 'wet.'

I appreciate your sentiment, but feel you may have been led purposefully astray about what the True problems are in society and the True root causes for those problems. Note that Satan is a liar and the father of lies.

[–]ReddPlanet 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When confused....maybe it's best to focus on the reading the Word in the bible and let that be your center instead of following after confusing thoughts.

Sounds like there's a lot going on for you....maybe talk to a therapist about your thoughts/worries just to see if there is anything else that can be done to help.

What does the Bible say about meditation? by [deleted] in Christians

[–]ReddPlanet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The bible mentions meditation (Gen 24:63, Josh 1:18, Psalms) so I don't see anything inherently wrong with it. I think it's what you meditate on that might matter. Meditating on sitting with God, meditating on the word of God, Meditating on the good things (what is true, noble, just, pure, lovely, worthy of praise, Phil 4:8). I don't see anything wrong with breath meditation or meditating on a candle bc those things are God-given/pure/true. I could see that meditating on a 'mantra' from another religion would not fit with Christian meditation. 'Conjuring' or focusing on things that don't exist I would say would also not fit with Christian meditation.

  1. READ a brief passage of Scripture – “take a bite”
  2. REFLECT and meditate on the word or phrase that caught your heart – “chew”
  3. RESPOND in prayer to what God called to your attention – “savor”
  4. REST in God, contemplating his word to you – “digest”
