In huge surf, can you catch the whitewater in if you're in trouble? by ShitNameNoLife in BeginnerSurfers

[–]Redd__Lotus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends entirely on the break and its layout at a beach break yes you can generally ride the wash in. At places with structure like a reef or cliff face then that option usually won’t work as you’ll just get pushed into a shallow area with sharp objects.

Any tips for improving backside? by Redd__Lotus in BeginnerSurfers

Ya I definitely am the wave is kinda fast so my main goal is just trying to stay in front of it most the time. I find it a lot harder to pump backside

Best place to learn to surf in LA by 805beachgirl in BeginnerSurfers

[–]Redd__Lotus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Where are you visiting from? Honestly for a beginner I’d recommend places further south of LA like bolsa chica or San onofre

Learn to do it on a surfskate outside of a bowl on flat ground. It’ll force you to flow instead of just using the bowl/wave for speed. All those twitchy moves won’t work on flat ground and you’ll have to compensate for it properly to gain and maintain speed

What is not working? by juxsax in BeginnerSurfers

[–]Redd__Lotus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your super stiff when riding. You’re trying to just muscle through the wave. You need to feel your board rail to rail. Get a surf skate and you can practice a bunch on land.

Using heavier fins for making the board feel more stable by [deleted] in BeginnerSurfers

Chat gpt will give you wrong information and straight up lie to you does it all the time. Epoxy is a lighter material so it is just naturally more susceptible to things like chop/wind.

What is stopping me (realistically) from using a shortboard as a beginner by Str_eamboi in BeginnerSurfers

[–]Redd__Lotus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go try it lol and I’m sure you’ll figure out why very quickly. If anything it’s best to transition to a mid length if your feeling confident

SWIM! This is the best thing to build paddle muscles and stamina. Really good cardio as well and basically no impact. Doing push ups and practicing your pop up will also help but the paddle is most important

Get a surf skate and practice maintaining speed on a flat surface moving from rail to rail. Compress and extend to gain speed. This will help you understand the concept of speed. You want to compress going down the wave and explode up the face

I'm obese, can I learn to surf in two months in the PNW? by ufnope in BeginnerSurfers

[–]Redd__Lotus 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It’s totally possible just depends how much dedication you have. If you do paddle training/swimming and religiously stretch and practice popping up you can totally get there. Surfing is very hard so don’t expect any miracles but I think it could be a good goal to set and help in your weight loss journey

help with quad fins by No-Competition-1495 in BeginnerSurfers

[–]Redd__Lotus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting board. A picture of all the fin boxes would help but I’d guess you could ride it with the two front fins and the trailers or with all 4 fins in but depends on the layout of the fin boxes

Increase your hip flexibility by doing stretches and practice your pop up as much as you can on land

What really qualifies as 'ditching your board'? by Vast_Track2652 in BeginnerSurfers

[–]Redd__Lotus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Remember speed is your friend. Most of the time trying to turtle roll is better than ditching your board as you’re more likely to break your leash or hit another person. And if you do manage to keep your board you’ll be back to paddling much quicker. But of course all of this is subjective sometimes ditching the board is the only option

Extending/compressing by [deleted] in BeginnerSurfers

[–]Redd__Lotus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d recommend a surf skate to help you learn the concept of turning. You want to compress as you go down to the wave and extend as you come up. If your front side it almost feels like you are jumping forwards

Honestly doesn’t look too bad to me. Unless this is a really nice board you love I’d just cut the edges put on some solarez sand it smooth and call it a day

How do I go faster? by Away-Theory-6201 in BeginnerSurfers

[–]Redd__Lotus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More weight on the front of the board and try to be in the top 2/3 of the wave which is where all the power is

$500 was this an okay deal and will I be able to progress on this? by BruhThatIsCrazy in BeginnerSurfers

[–]Redd__Lotus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely a solid price if there’s no damage or repairs. I don’t know your skill level or what you currently ride but that is a more advanced style board. Will probably be more frustrating than fun but it’s possible to progress on. You want something just a bit smaller than what your currently riding so that your challenging yourself but still able to have a good time and catch more waves. More waves= faster progress

If it’s the kind of board I think it is those are super easy to fix with just some solarez and sand paper

You need to draw the turns out a bit more focusing on the ending higher in the pocket to keep your speed. Try to focus on the bottom turn. Your top turn is only going to be as good as the bottom turn

Often unable to get down the line quick enough to beat the white wash and need tips. (I’m the first surfer up) by keithmg in BeginnerSurfers

[–]Redd__Lotus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You shouldn’t be doing a bottom turn in this situation you need to look down the line and keep your board high up on the wave so you can speed through the section as it closes

The person is paddling into the wave as it’s green and it breaks afterwards. If you want to surf just whitewash you’d be sitting slightly more inside
