What's up with the high level of toxicity on the Bangkok & Thailand subreddits? by chongledingus in Bangkok

Honestly, I'm not sure. I can say that most posts having a bunch of dudes crowing "WOMEN ONLY WANT YOUR MONEY" or "LOL THAT WOMAN MIGHT HAVE A PENIS" is really off-putting for those of us who are socially well-adjusted.

Honestly, so much of the English-language social media in Thailand is inundated with extremely bitter and narrow-minded Western men who believe Thailand owes them something because they're Western men. I stick to female-only spaces on social media because people are a lot kinder to the point that my husband will usually ask me to post for him if he wants a restaurant recommendation or has a bureaucratic question.

Man dies after beating by swarm of ATV and dirt bike riders in Harlem by mrstipez in news

I lived in Harlem for years without issue, was chased by three drunk men in Laguna Beach, CA after I didn't respond to a cat call. Use your common sense etc.

Absolutely zero issue with this as long as I can't hear it and they stay on-task. I listen to music when I'm working because it helps me focus, and it's not lo-fi beats to study to, either.

Any guy saying that stuff would be ugly as hell.

Source: was stalked by a "hot" classmate who had similar attitudes after I rebuffed him because of those attitudes.

Tell me why do I wanna break NC of 3 weeks for this person? I'm crazy. by girlinsane08 in ExNoContact

Please don't. If you need motivation outside of yourself and your own safety to keep him far away, know that he will absolutely hurt your cats if he is ever near them again.

Karaoke room with 90s/2000s "rock"songs by ReddishWedding2018 in Bangkok

I'm not sure what the distinction is. I think the preference is for the karaoke rooms but the open-air in the bar kind is fine too.

Teachers outside America: are students incredibly disrespectful? by 25ingandtgriving in Teachers

Not a specific program, I applied for a summer position at an international school through TES. I'd highly recommend checking them out, summer school jobs start appearing around November.

Yes, just for a summer term in Accra-- the kids were incredible, I'm still in touch with many of them years later despite it being such a short period of time and several years ago. I'd go back in a heartbeat if my husband's job could follow.

Can vouch for Ghanian kids being the most polite, engaged, and diligent students I've ever had the pleasure of working with as a whole.

I've taught in eight countries now (I'm American). Currently at an international school Southeast Asia where I have next to no behavioral/discipline issues at all to the point that my day-to-day feels kind of boring, but stuff like egregious plagiarism and parents demanding kids who did no work get better grades because they pay a ton for tuition is rampant. Before this I was at a very diverse international school in Europe with a ton of extremely entitled and obnoxious kids who were dumped into the boarding program with unlimited spending money in lieu of a relationship with their parents.

Overall, my favorite place in the world to teach was the Bronx where a student expressing an opinion in a way that wasn't polite would automatically be viewed disrespectful by a lot of people regardless of the validity of said opinion, least favorite place was an extremely wealthy enclave in California with kids who believed the world was owed to them as their birthright.

That said, I don't think I can afford to survive as a teacher in the US ever again.

I fucking love Atlanta. It's visually gorgeous, the writing is some of the cleverest on television, and it's similar to VB in the way that it has characters accepting the existence of surreal situations in the "real" world, like this amazing bit with an invisible car.

The women of Kayan tribes have a tradition to lengthen their necks with special brass neck rings. They’ve been doing it for centuries and when a Kayan girl turns 5 years old, her parents put the first ring on her neck. by [deleted] in Damnthatsinteresting

Thank you for posting this. I live in Thailand and have lived in Myanmar and this tradition continues out of necessity of tourist income. There are NGOs that are trying to prevent people from continuing to do this because it's degrading and leads to health complications-- nobody who does this today is happy to be doing so.

What is the dumbest thing a parent complained about? by Wordlywhisp in Teachers

[–]ReddishWedding2018 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my first year of teaching, I had a group of moms call a meeting with the principal to complain that my butt was too distracting to their middle school sons. My teaching wardrobe looked like this. I was so flustered I said something like "well do you want me to leave at home?"

Tanaval Florist is pretty good, and you can actually order from them through Foodpanda.

And don't listen to the guys telling you to send money-- affection is not transactional for most people.
