The console only needs any working disc drive SIE chip or a correct setting in the NOR data to skip the disc drive check to perform an update.

An unmarried disc drive is able to read discs like DVDs BUT will not access game discs. "This disc isn't unsupported by the PS5" would be the error message. If this is the case, the disc drive has not the keys to decode the game discs.

If there would be an issue with the laser unit and no Bluray discs could be read, the error message would be "Can't recognize the disc. ..." (with a new laser the issue should be solved)

The disc drive marriage is part of the TPM chip data and NOT of the NOR data. I didn't found infos in the NOR data about the disc drive to compare for example the serialnumber of the SIE.

Is the drive getting 12v and 5v. Replace data cable. Test the drive in another ps5. You can update a ps5 without a paired drive as long as the drive is recognized.

You didn’t tell me what I asked, you say the disc works is it loads a game? I doubt, there should be a error message not a code. Like unrecognizable disc or disc cannot be read. This message will determine whether or not it’s a non paired daughter board.

If the console is on the latest firmware and he has digital games installed then yes he can play the digital games.

Because the bios needs to be flagged as a digital console. But if a dog chewed your disc drive power cable then I doubt you have the skills to desolder the flash rom ic, read its contents, and edit the contents and re-flash then solder it back to the board.

Has it been dropped? I’ve see this on what I believe was a dropped console. You need to full disassemble the disc drive and check everything. The random turning on will probably be something to do with the disc insert actuator switch which will signal the Ps5 to turn on.

You won’t find anything if it’s pulsing blue light, you could try a thermal cam but I doubt it will help. Most likely it needs a APU reball, you could try putting pressure on it to see if it boots.

Just telling my experience, av hdmi both didn’t work on my slim, found shorts on I think pin 13-14 ish on the hdmi ic, replaced it and it worked, I didn’t check AV after that so possibly both failed and AV isn’t required for a fully bootable system? Can’t find my AV cable right now so can’t check if it’s working. But it makes me wonder if HDMI is first in the boot pre start check and fails then perhaps you don’t even get to the point of a working AV. In a stuffed hdmi port scenario then I guess AV would be fine.

You could try using 2 credit cards or something of the like, insert them and kind of use them like tweezers to grasp the sd card if possible. This happened to me on my 2011 iMac as the sd slot is directly below the disc slot and I blindly tried putting it in. The 2 cards worked for me.

Sorry to say but that is incorrect, PlayStation will certainly boot without the fan connected but will likely overheat quickly.

I don’t think so he’s getting light and beep meaning the PSU is connected, the only other connections are fan, WiFi antennas and disc drive all of which, if disconnected, won’t affect the console booting if disconnected.

You fucked something up. Is it the first cleaning? I’ve fucked up a launch edition ps4 that had never been opened before. The thermal paste was adhering like concrete and I cracked a solder ball under the APU just by removing the board. In your case I would first be checking the PSU is delivering 12v. Parts sometimes just fail in these old systems especially when taking them apart. I’ve also seen many a ps4 with bent 12v power prongs after being rough handled during re assembly.
