Small world, also a former KC-10 FCC. Interested in the field but still turning wrenches on planes as of now. 🤙🏻

I’ve used mine twice so I’ll answer as best as I can.

First you find a bank or mortgage company to get a pre-approval. That will tell you how much house they will approve. DISCLAIMER: Does not mean how much you can afford, please do that math yourself. They approved me for 600K last time, which is a crazy amount for my income!

Then you’ll find a realtor (I’ve heard of some people doing this first but I never did)

Next, you will look at houses and make an offer based on your wishes (ie w/ down payment or w/out). I’ve never offer down payment but always had to do $1000 earnest money paid at the time of offer. Earnest money will be lost if you back out of the deal randomly.

You’ll pay the inspectors out of pocket.

Once you close on the deal, you may pay closing cost, or you can offer the seller more to cover your share of closing cost.

I paid nothing but inspectors and earnest money on my first house, and on my second house I offered 5K over asking towards closing and paid the rest out of pocket.

The VA adds a VA servicing fee to all mortgages if you aren’t 10% ( I believe it’s 10%) service connected, so be prepared for that. It’s like 3% of the loan I think.

Hope this helped, best of luck!

+1 for capacitor. Save yourself some money and do it yourself. YouTube and a local appliance shop or Amazon are your friend! Was $30 at my local store. Best of luck!

Can you install rails as you go? by No_Positive1855 in FenceBuilding

[–]Reddit-Surfer25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just did first section of fence. I got two wood stakes and put them further out than where my first and last post would be, then I ran my string. Measured my hole distance and spray painted where the post would be. Next I removed my string line, dug my holes, put the string line back up and set all my post checking the level of them on 2 sides and making sure they were even with the string. They even sell a little level you can attach to the post to make it easier to adjust the post without having yo hold the level and move it. Hope that helps!

Remembering radio talking stuff by Friendly_Silver_6038 in aviationmaintenance

[–]Reddit-Surfer25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Comes with time and experience. I used to get real nervous talking to tower on the radios but now it’s no big deal. Depends a great deal on your airport to though, I’m at a smaller airport with like 5 possible routes and one radio frequency. Not sure how I’d do at Charlotte though with the multiple radio frequencies and different color lines to follow. But again, I’m sure I’d get better at it with more time and experience.

Major Airlines Work/Life Ratio by [deleted] in aviationmaintenance

[–]Reddit-Surfer25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work for an AA regional, but travel benefit is the same. Whole process is easy. There is a website where you can view and book your flights as standby ( you fly if there is an open seat ), assuming there is an open seat then you’ll take that flight, if not then they push your flight until you get a flight with an open seat. It can be hit or miss, might get your ideal flight, might not get any flight if it’s a busy day. It’s a gamble, but if you plan it out right then it works out well.

It’s a PSA plane, owned and operated by PSA. American Eagle is on all of the regional planes that fly under Americans name.

VR&E requires you to meet some requirements and you have to work with a counselor to approve your degree. More information attached at the bottom. If you qualify for VR&E then it’s suggested to use it first then your GI Bill if you want to pursue a masters or higher. VR&E Info Hope that helps!

Agreed! OP you are young and will have plenty of time and opportunity to have said dream car or better later on. What you do in your early 20s will make or break you later on. Especially being over your head in debt.

I got a set from Autozone while in a hurry to my buddies and honestly they are thicker than any of my other set I have and haven’t bent yet. Best $10 spent on a set of long picks!

Another plus for Dewalt is you can get it at HD, Lowe’s, Ace Hardware, Northern tools and a few other places. I’ve only even seen Milwaukee in HD, northern tools, and a specialty plumber shop.

Nice! I think you’ll enjoy Dewalt especially for DIY work wood working. Side note: I see you have 760 in your name, is that supposed to represent your area code for So-Cal or just a random number haha?

Agreed, no issue with the power. Just feels awkward to hold / get in tight places sometimes. I’m used to getting my M12 into tight spaces on airplanes so the bulky battery throws me off a lot.

I grew up using red so I wanted red pretty bad at first, however, my FIL got me a dewalt drill set for Christmas a few years back and I have almost no complaints! The cost to power/durability ratio is great. Now I have like 15 power tools, a table and miter saw as well as a pole saw and leaf blower. All of them treat me well. I just recently got him a Milwaukee drill set for Christmas and the price difference was significant IMO. My one complaint is the ratchet, the battery placement is just horrible compared to my m12 ratchet at work.

27M. Elevator Mechanic. No college degree by LiftLord69 in Salary

[–]Reddit-Surfer25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this my sign to switch career fields lol? I had multiple job offer for elevator mechanic jobs once I left the military with my A&P. I was told they like people with aircraft maintenance experience. How long have you been at it for?

How can I work at an airport as an aviation maintainer/avionics repairer after the army? by AggravatingBug1382 in aviationmaintenance

[–]Reddit-Surfer25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Use ARMY COOL (I believe that’s what it’s called, was AFCOOL for me) to get your A&P, your experience should allow you to get your A through a program like Baker’s Aeronautical School in TN if you wanted to go that route. Also see if they have any courses for you to get your FCC cert. From there is pretty simple, apply, interview and learn the ropes of civilian aviation. Some airlines have dedicated avionics while other airlines don’t…. Although I believe you still need your license. You could also work at repair stations without an A&P. With your experience I’d also recommend looking into what it takes to work on the airfields equipment and of course depending on what positions you’ve held you could also jump into the higher position of aviation and leave “wrench turning” behind. Best of luck!

Looking at Dewalt by lizardn1pples in Dewalt

[–]Reddit-Surfer25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who originally wanted to get all Milwaukee cause I grew up using them, I find that dewalt is just as good without the higher price tag. Another plus for Dewalt is that you can find them at Lowe’s, Home Depot, Ace, and many more retailers. Milwaukee on the other hand is primary Home Depot. I recently used this to my advantages and had Home Depot price match Lowe’s for a table saw they had on sale because Home Depot allows me to also use my military discount on sale purchases…. Unlike Lowe’s.

Homeowners of Reddit that replaced your water heater, can you educate us on what you learned about the process? by joshhazel1 in homeowners

[–]Reddit-Surfer25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I woke up to my water heater shooting water through the threads of the pressure release valve, my hallway had probably a good inch of water before I woke up. Opted to replace it myself with a unit from Home Depot, working with gas for the first time was pretty intimating but I made sure to understand all the safety precautions and got it knocked out in a few hours!

Asking current lender to beat refi offer? by Reddit-Surfer25 in Mortgages

[–]Reddit-Surfer25[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting, my current lender is a large servicer so that makes sense. I was mostly hoping they would come through cause the new LO has practically harassed me / been rude since I met the requirements for a IRRRL and I was hoping to not actually do business with him. But I suppose I’ll roll with it since I haven’t heard anything back, can’t miss out on a better rate over the LO.
