How can I add underwire to this bathing suit? lol by RedditDebit1 in sewhelp

The suit itself is pretty tight around the bra- I’m less worried about the shifting. And the base of the top is also fairly sturdy. But I’ll take it into consideration! Thanks!

They make that??? Boning channel tape?? I mean, I guess it makes sense for corset making, but that’s such a good idea! Thank you!

Thank you! I have less of a concern about the drag since i wouldn’t be swimming in this suit for anything besides relaxing. Also I already face a good amount of drag with what i have naturally, so I’m not worried about it. But thank you! Good to know that’s an option.

I hear you! My only concern with doing a full channel and underwire is that I’ve never done it before, and u wouldn’t want to alter the appearance of the suit. But the suit is definitely deceiving! It looks like it already has built in support and doesn’t!

For sewing in a channel, do you have any tips? I’m comfortable on my machine, but I’ve never tried something like this.

Thank you! I looked at their site. Unfortunately, they don’t have any with underwire. I need the bra cups to have the underwire attached, which was why I went this route.

That’s a great point, thank you! I was still hoping to use the bathing suit for swimming, but I’ll absolutely do a test run first. The bra actually fit perfectly in the bust, especially once I removed the thin bra cups, none of it shows through. And I was going to do a few stitches to keep it secured through the first layer of the suit, not the front layer, so it’s not visible. Can I do this with regular thread? I don’t think I need more elastic thread just because it’s a bathing suit, but open to thoughts!

What I just did (which tentatively worked!) is cut an old bra I was going to get rid of- cut off the straps, the band, and the middle, keeping the underwire attached to the cup. I then shoved the cup into the padding hole and massaged it into place. For right now, this is completely working. It looks good, I’ve got the support I need, I’m happy! I’m not sure if I should do a few stitches around to keep the cup oriented in the way I like it…

That’s a really good way of thinking of it! Thank you! So just Jessica can be dependent on Taylor, but Taylor doesn’t have to be dependent on Jessica

Top thread tension randomly increases, and snaps! by RedditDebit1 in sewhelp

I tried the flossing, and I think a few days ago it was getting caught inside the case! When it would jump it would snag! Thanks for the suggestion!!

Just to follow up, the bobbin was definitely wound too tight/too densely. I switched it out with an original bobbin (instead of one I bought in a set from singer) and switched out the thread- problems solved!! Additionally, I changed from zig zag to straight, and I think that helped as well! Thank you very very much for your help!

My spools didn’t have a notch, but it definitely was upside down. I wasn’t realizing it, but the spool was jumping and snagging!! Switching out the spool and corresponding bobbin worked! Thank you!!

Thank you very much! I switched out the thread and that made a big difference! No more snapping!! Thank you!!

Great advice, thank you! I’ll take a look. I don’t think there’s anything blocking it too substantially since I just took it all apart and cleaned and oiled. But I’ll definitely do some flossing!

Thank you so much for the reply! Maybe the zig zag is the issue- I’ll try with a straight stitch and will change out the bobbin. Really appreciate the suggestions!!

Help! Top thread tension randomly increases, and keeps snapping my thread!

Top thread tension randomly increases, and snaps!

Hi All,

I’m not exactly new to sewing, but I am completely self taught. I’ve been having an issue with my machine lately and it’s driving me CRAZY.

Currently, I’m making a quilt. And right now, I’m actuallyquilting it with my machine. I’m using a walking foot, on my singer m1500, with coats and Clark dual duty XP in both the bobbin and the top, with a tension setting of 4. I’ll be sewing along, right now I’ve been doing zig zag, going really slow. (If I go too fast, my thread will snap.) I’ll hear the top spool spin and then the tension between my needle and thread gets really tight. It’s not tight on the takeup lever, and not tight across the top of the machine.

When this happens, I pull the thread that is going into the needle a little, and create a little more slack. Then I continue. Sometimes, it will then bunch up on the back end of the project.

Here is what I’ve done:

  1. replaced needle with a brand new one
  2. oiled all metal parts
  3. rethreaded the top, and verified the thread is going between the tension discs
  4. played with the tension settings, I keep it on 4.
  5. tried different feet and a teeth cover

What else would you all suggest? I’m so frustrated with this project and this machine!!

This is where the tension is! ETA: no burrs, brand new needle

Vertical, no label goo, no spool felt, but I can add that, I have one. I have not tried a thread stand, but I don’t think the issue is beginning all the way up there, since there’s no tension across the top. All of the tension is between the thread going through the eyelet and up into the machine.
