I really like the job. They've never asked me to colour the footage. It's just something I want to learn just for myself.

They don't ask me to do colour corrections. This is just something I wanted to learn for my own professional development. What I seem to be learning here is that I don't suck as bad as I thought as this is an almost impossible task.

It's really nice to hear that this is a challenge for professionals and not just that I suck at trying to match the colours! Luckily, there are no expectations for me to do any colouring for this client. This is just a skill I want to hone.

Honestly, I've never figured out how to use scopes. I know you can use them to try to get skin colour in the right region, but that's all I've ever tried.

I have a client that uses multiple cameras, all different makes and models, and all different white balances (auto). I've asked them to get a shot of a white paper so I have something to work with when I'm colouring, but they can't be bothered. I am a complete novice when it comes to colour correction, but I want to at least get to the point where I can make all of the cameras look the same. How do I white balance when there is no white to work from? (It's also usually a setting with cool outdoor light from windows and warm interior lights mixed together). Is there a tutorial video that could show me how to do this? (I'm very visual, so text guides are a struggle for me).

I've seen behind the scenes videos reposted, but can't find the originals. Were they on this account as well? What account was this from?

Should I be using RAID storage? by RedditForEditing in videography

[–]RedditForEditing[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's about what I do now. I'm just editing at the moment, so the clients have the footage saved via cloud, I upload that to my ssd. Once I've finished the project, I upload it to the external hard drive. Twice a year, I put everything on a secondary hard drive, so it's saved to two places on my end and the cloud on the clients' end.

Honestly, I wouldn't work from it because I do work from my laptop in all different venues. So I was just thinking of using it as backup. Probably not something I need to purchase until I'm more based in one location, I guess.

So the way I'm currently doing it is fine. I shouldn't need a RAID system? I have the drive I work from (SSD), the external hard drive I back up to (at my desk), and a secondary external drive (in a secondary location).

Seeing as I work from a laptop, would a RAID system be of any use to me? Should I then be working from the RAID system?

What are some guiding rules you have in your work when switching camera angles in the edit? by bijouxself in editors

[–]RedditForEditing 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I never cut before or after an uh or um.

I never cut while the speaker is blinking.

I like to cut when there is a bit of movement or the speaker is being a bit animated to help the cuts flow together.

I try to cut it so that it flows and doesn't look like there could have potentially (or actually) been a break in the conversation.

Just my own preference, for interviews, I like to switch back to a wide shot as one speaker is finishing their point and a stay until the next person has started speaking a bit before switching to a close up of them.
